A Brief Overview of a Unique Culture

Japan is an ultra-modern country with a rich cultural tradition. It is a land of contrasts, where geisha talk on cell phones and gaijin study ancient arts. Urban youth are on the cutting edge of fashion and technology while dozens of festivals continue to honor the old ways and ancestors.
These are just some of the things I love about Japan.

What I Love About Japan

A not-nearly comprehensive list of some of the things I find fascinating about Japan, with a brief reason why, mostly related to tradition or aesthetics.
  • The gracefulness of pagodas.
  • The delicate glow of paper lanterns.
  • Great tasting Japanese candy in fun funky packaging
  • Beautifully intricate woodblock prints.
  • The elegance and tradition of kimonos.
  • Japanese coins- interesting for their different shapes
  • Stunningly beautiful origami and washi papers!
  • The stark silhouette of Mount Fuji
  • Pretty pink sakura (cherry blossoms)
  • Unique and graceful festival kites
  • Torii Gates
  • tea ceremony
  • raku- traditional beauty
