Jason Castro's Musical Journey

Let's look back and see how Jason got to where he is now.

Success did not come overnight for this talented singer-songwriter. Let's explore Jason's beginnings in the field of music.

Jason's grandfather was an opera singer and his father and all five of his uncles sing and play guitar. He actually started playing drums in the fifth grade and played in bands throughout high school. After graduating, he entered Texas A&M University and bought a guitar because he couldn't play drums in the dorm. At first he couldn't sing and play guitar at the same time so he looked for videos on the internet that could teach him singing and breathing techniques.

When he was in University, Jason would drive home every weekend to play shows with his band and would listen to all different types of music on the three-hour drive. That's when he fell in love with pop singer-songwriter music. Eventually, he got up the nerve to perform at local coffeehouses where he met other songwriters. During his last semester at college, he lived in a house full of musicians.

In August 2007, Jason decided to try out for American Idol when the auditions were held in Dallas. This was the start of his serious musical journey. Fans all over the world fell in love with his down-to-earth personality and more importantly, the authentic maturity and spell-binding intimacy of his voice.

He finished his Idol stint in 4th place (after Syesha Mercado, David Archuleta, and David Cook) but he has already won the hearts of many people all over the world so when the tour ended, he moved to Los Angeles and began writing songs, eventually signing a deal with Atlantic Records.

Jason Castro without dreadlocks?

What do you think? Make your opinion count!

Jason Castro is known for his signature dreadlocks, but like any regular guy, he used to sport a neat and short albeit "generic" hairstyle. (See Exhibit A)

I personally think he looks great either way but I will have to go with the dreadlocks look. It suits his laid-back and cool demeanor perfectly.

So, my dear Jason Castro lovers, what say you?

Should Jason Castro keep his dreads or chop them off for a fresh, new look?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes, he should keep his dreads! It's his signature style.

arncyn says:

Keep them! He looks great either way but the dreadlocks give him his signature look.

No, he should just chop them off, they look awful.

What a long way to go from construction science!

I generally miss American Idol so, each year. What I usually mainly catch
are the funny auditions that pop up on YouTube showing rejected
finalists (my current fave is pants on the ground).

Anyhoo, I like acoustic folky music, and the singer-songwriter genre
has an authenticity that has always appealed to me. Thank for the
    introduction C :)

I have been a fan of Jason's since day one on American Idol. He is an amazing singer/songwriter. His new EP is wonderful. The songs are all done his own way and make a good representation of what he wants his music to sound like. You should check Jason out on line and also try to see him live at one of his many concert stops with Matt Hires and Caitlin Crosby. It was fun seeing a lot of Jason's musical history in one spot. Great job on the lens.

Yes, how can we forget him.. He makes AI season 7 the best.. His song just recently played on the radio and you can tell that it is Jason Castro. It will surely be a hit in PI.

It's funny to read about old AI's finalists. Never really think about it. We watch the show because my daughter loves it and the drama is hilarious. Great lens.

Well, I love American Idol and I wasn't that fond of Jason Castro when he was on. One of my daughter's friends loved him and I would tease her all the time about him. I have to admit that he sounds good here. I think they do well after the show if they stay true to who they are, and he seems to be doing that. Great lens.

I've never heard about him but must say that it's not the kind of show I would watch on TV. But I must also say that after having read this account about this singer, American Idol is surely 100% more interesting and of a best quality than the show presented in France and called "Nouvelle Star"; which was created after Brits Got Talent and American Idol. Anyway, blessed by a SquidAngel for the overall layout.
    Dom.
