Touch and Be Touched by These Amazing Sculptures

Jaume Plensa is an extraordinary modern sculptor, born in Barcelona, Spain, with the ability to create magical pieces, some of which are designed to be touched, tickled or downright bashed.

The image is of a work entitled "In the Midst of Dreams" - a recurring theme in Jaume's work and the starting point of my journey in appreciating this fantastic sculptor.

The Dream

at St Helens

The Dream

I first heard of Jaume when he was involved in Channel Four's Big Art project. He was selected to design a sculpture to sit on a disused coal mine near St. Helens. His initial design - based on a miner's lamp failed to inspire the project leaders, but his second idea - which became The Dream - gained universal approval.

The image above is not of The Dream, but of Alabaster Heads - where the lighting and smooth texture of the carvings belie their nature - they appear as if projections onto a surface. However the face above is similar in feeling, if not in size. Dream is 20 metres tall, these Alabaster heads - a snip at £100,000 - are about 2 metres tall.

They have a feeling of coming from an ancient culture, out of time

Alchemist

at MIT Boston, for one year only....

Alchemist

In Boston in March 2011, I walked past this wonderful work, not knowing at the time that it would cement my love for Jaume Plensa's work - there was no plaque or indication of who had created it. I just knew I loved it, so took various photographs, the best of which was the nighttime shot.

Jaume Plensa has loaned his work called Alchemist to MIT for one year, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the institute.

It was only once I attended his exhibition at Yorkshire Sculpture Park that I researched on the internet and found that this sculpture was indeed by the incredible Jaume Plensa.

Twins I and II at YSP

Jaume Plensa has described his exhibition at Yorkshire Sculpture Park as "the most complete... ever staged". It is a rare opportunity to see many of his pieces in the amazing landscape of the park and indoors.

All the images that follow are taken from this exhibition.

Yorkshire Souls I, II and III

with Kneeled Shadow in the background

Delicate, ephemeral bodies sit on large slabs of stone, rooting them in permanence, despite their fragile nature. The three figures face each others, but at a distance, hugging their own knees to shelter their own emotions perhaps as they converse or share time with others.

I'm a very physical artist, I need to touch things, but ideas can be touched too

See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil

Jaume Plensa at Yorkshire Sculpture Park

This work consists of three suspended bodies that sit on the walls, and project from them. The bodies are lit from within, giving them a ghostly luminescence and is designed to raise awareness of mental health.

Nuria and Urma

Huge heads, that sometimes face each other, and then face the viewer as you move around them. Their transparency, their delicacy, their clear youthfulness describes the impermanance of all our lives - they are not anyone in particular, so become everyone. Elegant and simple, they beguile and amaze.

As a sculptor, I basically work in the terrain of ideas
