Java moss is a fantastic plant for a range of aquarium purposes. Learn about this versatile aquatic species.

Java Moss Description

Java moss grows as a series of forking branches with no roots or stem. It can free float in the water or attach itself to hard rough surfaces such as logs or rocks. Some also use this plant by sandwiching it in between fly screen and forming a green living wall. By trimming heavily the moss will grow thicker and closer to the object it is attached to.

Java moss can tolerate low lighting but likes clean water and plant nutrients. Anything floating in the water will become lodged in the plant. This build up should be removed on a regular basis by gently vacuuming it from the foliage or lifting out the moss and rinsing.

People who breed fish find java moss invaluable. Fry can hide amongst it successfully and plant spawning fish also use it to lay eggs in. For more information or to buy this plant please visit the java moss plant page from e-Aquarium. For video of java moss in people's home aquariums please read on.

Java Moss Pearling

I have no idea how I got this to happen. I did a water change, dosed a little bit of Excel, and the Java Moss started pearling. The light on this is a plain fluorescent bulb, not even designed for plants.

Fish Eating Java Moss

People often see their fish picking at java moss and assume they must be eating it. Java moss is not found palatable by fish so this is highly unlikely.

The moss fronds can be a handy fast food outlet for a feeding fish none the less. Algae will grow on the surface of the moss and small tidbits will also become intertwined with the plant.

Java Moss For Breeding

Wispy fronds of java moss are an ideal inclusion in many types of breeding aquariums. Spawning mothers can seek refuge and new fry will also find this aquatic plant to be a safe haven. It is also ideal for egg scatterers as demonstrated in this video.

Breeding my pencil fish (Nannostomus beckfordi)

This is a short video of my Golden pencil fish spawning in a clump of java moss. The male drives the female into the moss, both fish come together and shake their bodys to release eggs and milt. The setup is a standard bare tank with sponge filter and a heater. The fish were put in at night and breed next afternoon. I have not had broods larger than 70 fry from these fish..Enjoy.
