If you're a beginning programmer, there are tons of languages you can start with. Java seems to be taught as a first programming language in lots of schools, but is it the best?

hmmmmm...I say yes and no. Cuz once you learn Java all other languages are easy.
If you have Windows then learning C Sharp not only teaches you to program but it teaches you a lot about Windows operating systems.
Python and Ruby are easy to learn, easy to use and more hosting companies are using them. Java Script is still the web's number one scripting language so sometime or the other you'll have to learn Java.
