Who is Jay Gatsby?

Jay Gatsby is the fabulously attractive, wealthy beyond measure, tragic hero of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel the Great Gatsby. A lonely and troubled character, Gatsby is tormented by his frustrated love for Daisy, his sweetheart of long ago. The novel, narrated by Nick, a neighbour of Gatsby's, follows Gatsby emotional bid for Daisy to its tragic end.

Daisy emerges in the novel as a shallow and frivolous character unworthy of Gatsby' devotion. She is also married to Tom Buchanan, putting her out of Gatsby's reach as a wife, but not out of his dreams and desires. He dedicates his life to having Daisy and buys a lavish home across the bay from Daisy's home, where he stands in the evening watching the

Gatsby first met Daisy while training to be an officer in Louisville. He set out to win her affections by climbing the social ladder and entering her social circles as a wealthy man. In the hope of one day attracting Daisy to his Gothic West Egg mansion, Gatsby hosts lavish parties every Saturday night. He remains a mysterious character to his guests. Nobody knows who he is, where he came from or how he accumulated his wealth. The narrator of the novel, Nick, eventually learns that Jay Gatsby was born James Gatz on a humble farm in Dakota but that he always had ambitions to escape poverty. He showed meticulous dedication and endurance in improving himself in order to accumulate impressive wealth. It emerges later that Gatsby has earned his fortune through bootlegging and other criminal activities.

His blind optimism and enduring feelings for Daisy, against all odds, make Gatsby fabulously romantic and appealing as a man but also a tragic hero, ulitmately the victim of his own love.

Why is Jay Gatsby So Sexy?

Not mentioning that Gatsby was playd by Robert Redford when he was at his most gorgeous, Gatsby has many of the same qualities that makes Mr. Darcy so sexy and attractive to women. He has the ability to show undying dedication and love to a woman, even the most unworthy of women. Every woman wants a man who can love so willingly and with such enduring feelings.

The Great Gatsby On DVD

This adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, scripted by Francis Ford Coppola, puts costume design and art direction above the intricacies of character. It's certainly a handsome try, and perhaps no movie could capture The Great Gatsby in its entirety. Robert Redford is an interesting casting choice as Gatsby, the millionaire isolated in his mansion, still dreaming of the woman he lost. And Sam Waterston is perfect as the narrator, Nick, who brings the dream girl Daisy Buchanan back to Gatsby. No, the problem seems to be that director Jack Clayton fell in love with the flapper dresses and the party scenes and the Jazz Age tunes, ending up with a Classics Illustrated version of a great book rather than a fresh, organic take on the text. While Redford grows more quietly intriguing in the film, Mia Farrow's pallid performance as Daisy leaves you wondering why Gatsby, or anyone else, should care so much about his grand passion. The effective supporting cast includes Bruce Dern as Daisy's husband, and Scott Wilson and Karen Black as the low-rent couple whose destinies cross the sun-drenched protagonists. (That's future star Patsy Kensit as Daisy's little daughter.) The film won two Oscars--not surprisingly, for costumes and musical score. -- Robert Horton
