The Cunning Hat
"How's it sit? Pretty cunning, don'tchya think?" ~ Jayne
In the twelfth episode of the science-fiction television series Firefly, the character Jayne receives a bright orange knitted cap, with ear flaps and a pompom, that his mother has sent him. He immediately puts it on, very impressed, much to the amusement of his crew mates.
"A man walks down the street in that hat, people know he's not afraid of anything." ~ Wash
The hat has become a fan favourite and Firefly lovers not only made their own, they created patterns so that others could enjoy the "cunning" creation.

Making a difference
While browsing around the internet looking for fan response to Jayne's hat I came across a touching letter from a mother who sells Jayne Cobb's hat and Jayne Cobb's hat kits for knitters on her website. Sales from the hat and hat kits help pay for therapy for her autistic daughter.
"The net proceeds from two Jayne hats or four kits are exactly the amount that it costs for one hour of occupational therapy or one half hour of speech therapy for my child. With the help she's getting, my child is doing remarkably well. She's in a mainstream second-grade classroom, with some extra help throughout the day. She'll be rising to third grade this fall. I do not believe this would be possible without the extra private therapies we've thankfully been able to afford."
