Historical Fiction Recommended Reading List

I am listing the Jean Auel books in order of their publication as a recommendation for your reading pleasure this summer. If you are a fan of historical fiction and have not read any of the Jean Auel Earth's Children Series, you are in for a real treat.

Not only does Ms Auel take us back to prehistoric times for the stories in her books, but she has such an engaging way of telling a story that grabs you in the first few paragraphs and will not let you go. I can not tell you how many times that I found myself still reading at 2 in the morning with the thought that I just wanted to finish this one chapter before I went to bed.

Jean Auel did extensive research for each one of her six books in this series and has won acclaim from not just her readers and peers but from anthropologists, archeologists, and paleontologists as well. Her research gives us a rather believable and probably pretty accurate view of how a prehistoric woman and the people she encounters lived.

The series of books known as the Earth's Children Series by Jean Auel were written over a span of about 30 years. Her final book was just released in March 2011.

The Clan Of The Cave Bear

Book One In The Earth's Children Series

The very first book in the Jean Auel books called the Earth's Children Series was Clan of the Cave Bear. It was first published in 1980 telling the story of how a young girl from the Cro-Magnon humans is rescued by a group of Neanderthals. She seems to be destined, even in this first book, to always be the outsider or stranger.

The story tells how Ayla grows up with the Clan, learns their ways, and is accepted by most but not by all. She endures hardships and abuse but survives due to her intelligence, her ability to accept knowledge, and adapt to just about anything. She is referred to by the Clan as one of the "Others" who seem like aliens to them.

Jean Auel Is My Favorite Author

I could waste some space here and give you a short bio of the author Jean M. Auel but I won't. You can find her biographical information on several sites. Instead, I want to share with you why I was willing to wait for each book in the Earth's Children series to come out and continued to read them over the 31 years it took for Ms. Auel to write them and get them published.

That is correct, I have been reading her books for 31 years and looked so forward to the next one to be published. One book was a 12 year wait but I anxiously bought the book as soon as it was in the stores and devoured it in a few short days.

Jean Auel is the best storyteller that I have ever read. Seriously! I have a number of authors that I enjoy reading but none can compare to Jean Auel. It may have a lot to do with the extensive research that she did on each of her books. She was able to take scientific evidence and facts about the prehistoric era that she chose to write her story in and make a most believable and remarkable saga of one woman who survived the brutal time frame that she lived in. Her characters are memorable and seem like old friends as I read the last of the series.

In her stories of Ayla, Jean Auel, helps us to realize the innovative thinking that a human would have to have to invent the tools that we now take for granted. She describes for us the foods that were eaten and how they would have been cooked. Her exhaustive research on the plants that would have been used for healing is remarkable.

Some refer to her books as speculative fiction instead of historical fiction. I guess I can see why because most of her story is speculating on how things were done. The extraordinary thing is that Jean Auel could take the research that she did, using the facts that are scientifically accurate and come up with the most incredible storyline.

Yes, I remained an avid fan for over 3 decades...that really says something about an author, I think.

The Valley Of Horses

Book 2 by Jean M. Auel

Published first in 1982, Jean Auel's second book in the series is titled "The Valley Of Horses". At 14, Ayla, has been cast out of the Clan by the new leader, Broud. He has despised her for a long time and once he is the leader looks for ways to get rid of her.

She goes on a search to find the "Others" that she knows she belongs to but finds a long and lonely journey ahead of her. She teaches herself to hunt and domesticates several animals while living alone in a far off land.

One day she hears a man's painful scream and the saga continues....

Each Book Stands Alone:

You would not have to read each of the Jean Auel books in order of their publication. Each book is a novel by itself but I think you will get much more out of the entire series if you start with book one and read your way through.

The Mammoth Hunters (Book 3)

Jean Auel's Earth Children Series

In 1985 the third book in the Earth's Children Series was published. "The Mammoth Hunters" continues the story of Ayla now on a journey with Jondalar, the man she saved in the Valley Of Horses. They are on the way back to his people, the Zelondoni. They encounter a group of people who call themselves the Mamutoi or Mammoth Hunters.

Ayla finds joy in getting to be around women again and becomes favored by some of the members of the Mamutoi, so much so that she is adopted. She struggles with prejudice when it is discovered that she was brought up by the "Flatheads" or Neanderthals who are looked upon as not much more than animals by these humans.

She also becomes enamored with Ranec, a charismatic man who wants to marry her. She will have to choose between him and Jondalar.

The Plains Of Passage

Book 4 by Jean Auel

Her readers had to wait 5 years before book 4 in the Earth's Children Series was published. "The Plains of Passage" continues the epic tale of Ayla. She and Jondalar leave the Mamutoi on a journey back to his people, the Zelandoni. They cross over the grasslands of the Ice Age and find innovative ways to survive and make their traveling easier in what will become Europe in ten thousand years or so.

At one point, Jondalar is captured by a really crazy woman and has to be rescued by Ayla and her wolf companion. This wonderful story shows the differences of even more humans that the couple encounter, some who think that Ayla may be a mystic.

Ayla is also having dreams that seem to be sent by Creb, the magician from the Clan that she was raised by. He keeps showing her a shelter made of stone. She doesn't know whether it is a good vision or something to fear.

The Shelters Of Stone

Jean Auel Writes Book 5

Jean Auel's readers had to wait 12 years for the 5th book in the series to be publshed in 2002. "The Shelters of Stone" take us to the land of the Zelandonii where Jondalar is from. Ayla learns more about how difficult it can be to be accepted by people who find her unusual because of her knowledge gained from the Neanderthals and the skills that she taught herself while living alone. She is a remarkable healer and is looked at skeptically because she has her animals who seem to understand her wishes.

This book really shows how a prehistoric society might have been and how one woman finds her way. It was well worth the 12 year wait to read it.

The Land Of The Painted Caves

Book Six by Jean Auel

Book 6 in the Earth's Children Series was released in March 2011. Jean Auel tells us this is the final book in the series, which actually makes me kind of sad. I have loved reading this epic series over the decades and will miss the characters a great deal.

I have not completed the book yet, I am about half way through but I can tell you that it has been wonderful reading about Ayla, Jondalar, and the society that they belong to.

This last book tells of Ayla and Jondalar's life together as she begins to train to be one of the spiritual leaders of the Zelandonii. Part of her training is to visit sacred caves that have been painted by humans before them. Even in her prehistoric time, these cave paintings in what is now modern France are something that brings awe to the viewer.
