Jean Leon Gerome (French, 1824-1904)
Jean Leon Gerome was born in Vesoul in 1824, the son of a goldsmith. In 1840 he went to study in the atelier of Paul Delaroche and later for a brief period studied under Charles Gleyre. By the age of twenty-three Gerome had his first success at the Salon of 1847 with The Cockfight. The painting's almost photographic quality combined with Classical subject matter would establish Gerome as a leader in the school of Academic Realism. The range of his interests was broad and included historical painting, Greek mythology, Orientalism as well as portrait painting.

In 1863 Gerome was appointed to be one of the three painting masters at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, quickly establishing himself as a respected teacher. During his life he became known for his Classical genre scenes and Middle Eastern Orientalist subjects executed in a highly polished Academic style. It was not until the late 1870's Gerome began producing sculpture, which has been attributed to his failing eyesight.

The Pipelighter - Jean Leon Gerome

Biography

Jean Leon Gérôme was born at at Haute-Saône Vesoul. in 1840 he traveled to Paris where he studied under academic painter Paul Delaroche. The two would later take a trip together to Italy during1843-1844. Gérôme saw Florence, Rome, the Vatican as well as Pompeii, however he had been more interested in to the realm of nature. He contracted a fever in 1844 and had been forced to cut his visit short and go back to Paris. Once back in Paris, such as several other pupils of Delaroche had done, Gérôme went to the atelier of artist Charles Gleyre where he trained for a short period. He next enrolled in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. During 1846 he attempted to participate the esteemed Prix de Rome, although was unsuccessful in the last phase as a result of his figure drawing being insufficient.

Gérôme attempted to better his skills with painting the piece titled The Cockfight in 1846,which was an academic practise portraying a nude young man along with a girl by his side, and with two fighting cocks with a backdrop the Bay of Naples.

He placed the painting the Salon during 1847 and it earned him a third class award. This painting had been viewed as the image of the Neo-Grec movement which had sprang from of Gleyre's studio with artists such as Henri-Pierre Picou as well as Jean-Louis Hamon, and had been defended by a prestigious French art critic of the time, Theophile Gautier.

Gérôme gave up his ambition to win the Prix de Rome and capitalised on his abrupt success. His art works titled The Virgin, the Infant Jesus and St John along with Anacreon, Bacchus and Cupid brought second class awards during 1848. During 1849 Gérôme created the paintings Michelangelo which is also known as also called In his studio as well as the piece A portrait of a Lady. During 1851 he ornamented a vase, which was afterward given by Emperor Napoleon III of France to Prince Albert, today located in the Royal Collection,

In 1822 Gérôme accepted a commission from Alfred Emilien Comte de Nieuwerkerke, Surintendant des Beaux-Arts in the court of Emperor Napoleon to create a large historical piece, the Age of Augustus icon painting. With this art work Gérôme blends the birthing of Christ along with conquered lands paying homage to Augustus. With the sizable down payment from this commission, Gérôme had been able to journey to Constantinople in 1853, along with actor Edmond Got. That had been the first of multiple trips to the East : during 1854 he took a different trip to Turkey along with the shores of the Danube, a place he attended at a concert of Russian inductees, producing music beneath the menace of a lash.

The Arab and his Steed - Jean Leon Gerome

During 1854 he finished an additional significant commission for adorning the Chapel of St. Jerome at the St. Séverin church in Paris. His painting of Last Communion of St. Jerome at the chapel exemplifies the influence of the teachings of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres in Gérôme's religious paintings.

In the exhibition during 1855 he added the works A Russian Concert, a Pifferaro, a Shepherd, Birth of Christ and The Age of Augustus. The Birth of Christ was slightly obscured in result, but in acknowledgment of its masterful interpretation the State bought it. Even so the humble art work, A Russian Concert which is also called also called Recreation in the Camp, had been more treasured than Gérôme's vast canvases.

During 1856 he made his first travels to Egypt. The trip was the precursor f many orientalist paintings rendering Arab religious belief, genre scenes as well as North African landscape painting*.

Gérôme's repute had been vastly increased during the Salon of 1857 with a collection of paintings of a more fashionable sort: the Duel: after the Masked Ball, Memnon and Sesostris, Egyptian Recruits Crossing the Desert as well as Camels Watering, a drawing that had been criticized by French novelist, publicist and journalist Edmond About.

The Carpet Merchant - Jean Leon Gerome

During 1858 he assisted in decorating the Paris home of Prince Napoléon Joseph Charles Paul Bonaparte in an elaborate Pompeian fashion. The prince had purchased Gérôme's painting titled Interior, which is a portrayal of a brothel likewise in a Pompeian style.

With the painting Caesar Gérôme attempted to go back to a stricter grade of art, the depicting of Classical themes, however the project failed to capture the public's interest. Gérôme's piece Phryne before the Areopagus, Socrates finding Alcibiades in the House of Aspasia as well as King Candaules brought about a bit of scandal on the grounds of the topics chosen by the artist, and earned him biting criticisms from writers Paul de Saint-Victor and Maxime Du Camp. With this Salon he as well presented the art works Rembrandt Biting an Etching and Egyptian Chopping Straw, which are two extremely carefully completed pictures.

He wed Marie Goupil who was the daughter of the worldwide art dealer Adolphe Goupil. The couple bore four daughters as well as a son. With his wedding he relocated to a home in the Rue de Bruxelles, near the music hall Folies Bergère. He extended it into a grand house providing stables along with a sculpture studio beneath with a painting studio in the uppermost level.

The Standard Bearer - Jean Leon Gerome

With his fifth try Gérôme had been elected a member in the Institute de France during 1865. He already held the title of knight with the Légion d'honneur and had been advanced to officer level during 1867. During 1869 he had been appointed an honorary member in the British Royal Academy. The King of Prussia Wilhelm I presented him with the Grand Order of the Red Eagle, Third Class medal. Gérôme's renown had been established to a level which he was asked, together the most distinguished French painters, to the celebrated opening of the Suez Canal during 1869.

The subject of his paintings Death of Caesar was replicated in Gérôme's historical art work Death of Marshall Ney, which had been exhibited with the Salon during 1867, in spite of official insistence to remove out the piece as it aroused sensitive memories. Gérôme went back with success to the Salon during 1874 exhibiting his art work Eminence Grise. During 1896 he created Truth Rising from her Well, which had been an effort to depict the transparence of an illusion. He consequently embraced the advance of picture taking as an option to his exact painting.

Jean-Léon Gérôme passed away in his atelier on January 10 in 1904. He had been discovered before of a portrait of the artist Rembrandt and near to his own art work titled The Truth. By his own asking, a simple burial service was held, lacking flowers or show. However the Requiem Mass dedicated to his memory had been attended by notable persons such as a previous president of the Republic, leading politicians along with several artists and authors. He was entombed in the Montmartre Cemetery before the statue Sorrow which he had cast previously for his son own Jean, who had passed away during 1891.
