Jean Leon Gérôme was born at at Haute-Saône Vesoul. in 1840 he traveled to Paris where he studied under academic painter Paul Delaroche. The two would later take a trip together to Italy during1843-1844. Gérôme saw Florence, Rome, the Vatican as well as Pompeii, however he had been more interested in to the realm of nature. He placed the painting the Salon during 1847 and it earned him a third class award. This painting had been viewed as the image of the Neo-Grec movement which had sprang from of Gleyre's studio with artists such as Henri-Pierre Picou as well as Jean-Louis Hamon, and had been defended by a prestigious French art critic of the time, Theophile Gautier.
