Jean Bart

Jean Bart (October 21, 1651 - April 27, 1702) - was a (Dutch born) French naval commander and privateer. His Flemish birth name was most probably Jan Baert.

Three reasons to love Jean Bart

1: He carried a licence from the King, and attacked only the King's enemies.

2: One of the most beloved Pirates. He was hero of his home town Dunkerque.

3: Renowned for his skillful and daring achievements in the wars of Louis XIV.

In World War II Dunkirk was almost completely destroyed by the Germans, but this statue of Jean Bart survived.
Apparently the sword that Jean Bart is holding points directly towards England, and it was used as a guide for the German air force.

More than 27 ships of the French Navy, over a period of 200 years, have born the name Jean Bart.
