Jeannie vs Samantha: Who is More Powerful?

I Dream of Jeannie versus Bewitched

In 1965, Bewitched debuted as a magic-themed situation comedy on ABC. The show was a huge hit, and finished second only to the very popular and established series, Bonanza. Viewers were crazy about the show's leading lady, Elizabeth Montgomery, as well her chemistry with a fine supporting cast. NBC decided to capitalize on the popularity of Bewitched—the following year's lineup included another magical sitcom called I Dream of Jeannie. The show's creator, Sidney Sheldon, was reluctant to cast a blonde actress as the genie, since there would be inevitable comparisons to Samantha in Bewitched. However, after auditioning dozens of actresses without success, he went with an early candidate, Barbara Eden, who had impressed him greatly in a genie-inspired film, The Brass Bottle. Both Samantha and Jeannie were beautiful blondes with supernatural powers who tried to please the men they loved by adapting to the human world. Comedic situations invariably ensued. While I Dream of Jeannie never reached the ratings peaks of Bewitched, the show developed a large following and both shows enjoyed success in later syndication. In addition, all eight seasons of Bewitched and all five seasons of I Dream of Jeannie have been released on DVD.

Jeannie all the way

queenofduvetcovers says:

Jeannie..hands down!!

Mary says:

Jeannie for sure. Doesn't get hotter than Miss Eden ;-)

OTD says:

Jeannie for sure. If she got mad, boy, she was ready to kill LOL And of course Barbara Eden is one of the most beautiful women ever. Boy, what a Babe she was. Marilyn Monroe would've had a run for her money against her <3 <3 <3 Jeannie rocks!!!!!

Ccmeu says:

Jeannie is my favorite but I like Samantha a lot too. :)

jeannie rocks!!

Gotta love Jeannie!!

Jeannie

Aamer says:

Everyone knows Jeanie always wins. Comment sections from the Jeanie vs Samantha debate always overwhelmingly support Jeanie. just do some Google searches for similar debates/articles there are a ton of them on the internet.

Blonde_Blythe says:

Jeannie! As long as no one traps her in the bottle, she can kick arse! ;-)

mcochs says:

I like Jeannie better!

JaguarJulie says:

Blink Blink ... blinkety blink blink!

idreamofjenny says:

In few episodes Samantha couldn't use her powers as well. In others not using her powers would also work against her. Samantha couldn't undo another equally endowed witch's spell.. but Jeannie could! With Jeannie the only condition was that she had to be freed - but even when she was in her bottle she could do magic! Either ways if you watch the shows now, even though IDOJ did borrow a lot of Bewitched's plots... IDOJ was fun!! Samantha was too perfect for my liking... not to mention Darrin's attitude sucked! Jeannie would kick Samantha's posterior any day!

JaguarJulie says:

Well, I'm going with Jeannie today as I'm more into head bobbing. That's the only reason, no nose twitching for me. ;)

Christine says:

FlaminCatDesigns says:

I loved them both, but I enjoyed so many more characters on Bewitched so it tends to be higher on my list than Jeannie.

PopCultureFan says:

Since my name is Samantha, I'll say... Samantha! Actually grew up watching and loving both! :)

RicoGoldstar says:

Samantha. As witches are thought to conjure spirits and control the forces of nature, Sam would cast a spell to capture and control Jeannie, as she is a spirit creature. Jeannie was ALWAYZ gettin captured.

Tipi says:

I remember loving both shows but we named our rabbit Samantha so will go that way. I always like the nose wiggle bells.

Sammie says:

I've got to go with Samantha - it's all in the name ;-)

MarkUpshaw says:

Jeannie didn't need many powers as sexy and beautiful as she was. But Samantha was focused and Jeannie could not win in a duel.

Twitch says:

Samantha all the way :)

Emily Van Elst says:

I would say both but I can't do both

JoanneOtt says:

Samantha

kimmanleyort says:

This is a really tough choice - I loved both shows. The nose twitch does it for me, though.

momto4 says:

I'd have to go with Samantha, but I loved both shows!

Pastiche says:

Sam, all the way - hey, she's a MOM, too! That takes extra super powers.

Tiddledeewinks says:

I say Samantha had the greatest power. I seem to remember Jeannie not able to use her power a few times and also she couldn't get out of her bottle, if her master wouldn't let her.

I Dream of Jeannie

A Few Facts Courtesy of Wikipedia

I Dream of Jeannie is a 1960s American sitcom with a fantasy premise. The show starred Barbara Eden as a 2000-year-old female genie, and Larry Hagman as an astronaut who becomes her master, with whom she falls in love and eventually marries. Produced by Screen Gems, the show originally aired from September 1965 to May 1970 with new episodes, and through September 1970 with season repeats, on NBC. The show ran for five seasons and produced 139 episodes. The first season consisted of 30 episodes filmed in black and white (decades later colorized for some broadcasts and a DVD release). The other 109 episodes were filmed in color. The series was created and produced by Sidney Sheldon in response to the great success of rival network ABC's Bewitched series, which had debuted in 1964 as the second most watched program in the United States. Sheldon, inspired by the movie The Brass Bottle, which had starred Tony Randall, Barbara Eden, and Burl Ives as the genie Fakrash, came up with the idea for a beautiful female genie. Both I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched were Screen Gems productions.

Home Sweet Home

Jeannie's famous bottle was not created for the show. The actual bottle was a special Christmas 1964 Jim Beam liquor decanter containing "Beam's Choice" bourbon whiskey.
It was designed by Roy Kramer for the Wheaton Bottle Company. Sidney Sheldon received one as a gift and thought it would be a perfect design for the series.

Bewitched

A Few Facts Courtesy of Wikipedia

Bewitched is an American situation comedy originally broadcast for eight seasons on ABC from 1964 to 1972, starring Elizabeth Montgomery, Dick York (1964-1969), Dick Sargent (1969-1972), Agnes Moorehead and David White. It is about a witch who marries a mortal and tries to lead the life of a typical suburban housewife. Bewitched continues to be seen throughout the world in syndication and on DVD and was the longest running supernatural themed sitcom of the 1960s-1970s era.

Bewitched

The Name is Darrin

Endora refuses to even use Darrin's name, alternatively calling him "What's-his-name," "Darwin," "Derwood," "Dum-Dum," etc., all much to his annoyance. She refers to him as "Darrin" only 8 times during the entire series run of 254 episodes.
