Meet Jed the Wolf Dog!

Jed the wolf dog is the much-loved star of the films White Fang and The Journey of Natty Gann. He is part wolf and part Alaskan Malamute.

Jed starred in three films, but is best known for portraying White Fang in the film of the same name, starring alongside a young Ethan Hawke.

I first encountered Jed (and, indeed, the young John Cusack) in The Journey of Natty Gann, and immediately fell in love with this canine star, even more so thanks to his later incredible portrayal of White Fang. Jed also appeared in the classic film The Thing.

Here is my tribute to Jed, the movie dog.

I have been watching White Fang since I was a kid and now I'm 29 and I still love that movie so very much. So much in fact, that I have my own wolf-dog. Jed was such a beautiful and amazing creature. Jed is the reason why I am such a big lover of wolves today. I'm going to spend some time at a wolf sanctuary for the birthday and I'll be thinking of Jed while I'm there. The world misses you Jed!

I watched White Fang again and it brought back memories. This last year I lost my Malemute/Wolf dog after being a member of my family for 13 years. Jed will always be a reminder to my daughter and I of our beloved Silver Mist. Maybe they are romping around together...

Sorry for my english... it's not my mother-language.
I saw both "The Thing" and "White Fang" ... in both films I was amazed by how good was the dog that starred the "thing" in Carpenter's movie, and "White Fang", the wolf-dog made ??famous by Jack London's novel, in the film with Ethan Hawke, however, ... I did not know it was the same dog!
Really... a great actor! Many of those who today call themselves "actors" would have much to learn from him ... ;)

hi, i was just wondering from mike..if you knew who jed's breeder was?
  • Mike Jun 27, 2011 @ 12:35 pm | delete
I knew Jed am still friends with his owner Clint. It is ironic that Clint also played the cruel owner with the whip in the Natty Gann movie. In reality Clint loved Jed dearly all his life. Jed was always well cared for, and was allowed to wander freely on the property where he lived until the ripe old age of 18.
  • MissMerFaery Jun 27, 2011 @ 4:21 pm | delete
That is wonderful to know! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of Jed here.
  • Tom Jul 6, 2011 @ 2:41 pm | delete
Hi Mike, I'd like for you tell Clint, thank you. From a wolfdog owner, for the light he's shined on a breed that has gotten a bad rep that is undeserved. As a boy I read White Fang, and have had many dogs in my life. About 14 years ago I had a chance to adopt a wolf dog. In the last 14 years, I've had my Dog (Beau), has been one of the best experinces of my life. You'll never experience anything in life like a wolf dog. There personalities are unlike any dog and loyalty unsurpased. That being said to anyone that reads this, a wolf dog is not for a person who dosn't plan on spending tons & tons of time with them, dosn't plan on going away for long vacations and can not be a pushover. They are like having a teenager that constantly test the boundries. My dog was my dog, and only listen to myself and my wife, And only after my wife and I were together for 2 to 3 years would he even acknowledge her existance. But after that, she was in love with him and him her Until his dying days 11/19/2010. I could never own a regular dog again, and when I'm ready will find another. Thats why I started looking for Clint to see if Jed has a blood line. If you have any info on this it would be greatly appreciated. Again thank clint for me.
    Thanks,
    Tom
