JEEP 4X4 SHIFTER LEVER CLIP REPLACEMENT

The joys of owning a Jeep never end. They are the funnest vehicle on and off road.

On the street, in the mud, or in the garage, the "fun" just keeps coming.

One of the joys of Jeep ownership, is doing all the repairs and upgrading a vehicle like this require. From the obvious upgrades, like a four inch lift, to those little repairs that no one knows about, like putting in a new JEEP 4X4 GEAR SHIFTER LEVER/HANDLE CLIP REPLACEMENT. It is just one fun thing after the other.

No. I am not being sarcastic here. I love to work on my Jeep just about as much as I enjoy driving it. And just about every time I drive it, it gives me another reason to work on it. Whether it needs it or not...

In this case, it was a "needed" repair. The Omix-Ada 18885.32 Warner T4 or T5 Shifter Handle Clip for Jeep (Part Number Omix-Ada 18885.32) that held the 4X4 shifter lever/handle, to my AX-15 transmission, broke. At first I thought that the Jeep 4X4 gear shifter/handle had just come off. I did not notice that the clip inside the shifter lever had broken. So I took it apart and put it back on. Just for it to come back off again.

You will also want to take a gander at the Omix-Ada 18885.33 Manual Trans Shift Handle Insulator. It goes over the clip.

The next time I took it apart, I took a closer look inside the shifter lever and found that the transfer case shifter handle clip had lost a "tooth." Without that "tooth" it could not hold onto the shifter lever of the transmission.

After realizing this, the search for a 4x4 shifter lever/handle clip was on. As I have a 1990 Jeep YJ, this was not an easy task. I did not know it at the time, but that clip is not listed for a YJ AX-15 transmission. The only listing I could find for that clip was the one that goes to the T-4 and T-5 transmission on the 1982-86 Jeep CJ.

So I took a chance and ordered the 4X4 shifter lever/handle clip that goes to the 82-86 Jeep CJ and put it in my 1990 YJ. It seems to be working and this is my step by step: How To Install The Jeep 4x4 Shifter Lever/Handle Clip, instruction page. Hope you enjoy it.

How To Install Jeep 4x4 Shifter Lever/Handle Clip

Keep in mind that this is not a page on who has the best looking interior in their Jeep YJ Wrangler.

So any observations or comments you may have in reference to the interior or condition of my Jeep, I ask that you kindly keep them to yourself. Thank you very much...

Anyhow, the first step in replacing the Jeep 4x4 shifter lever/handle clip is to locate the 4X4 shifter lever/handle. It is in the center of floor board behind the broken CB and on the left of the 5 speed transmission handle. It should have a 2H, 4H, N, and 2L on it. If not, it is the little lever next to the long lever. Find it? Good.

Now comes the fun part.

You have to take off the shifter lever knobs that are located at the top of the transmission and transfer shifter levers. If these knobs are stuck, you may need a large crescent wrench and a pair of vice grips to hold and turn them. If they are not stuck, then it is lefty loose and righty tighty.

Just get them off and set them to the side. You will need them again later. Unless you plan to replace them with some cool shifter knobs that you bought in advance. In that case, you can just chuck them and use the new ones.

The next step in this process is to remove the transmission/transfer case shifter boot from the floor.

If you have carpet in your Jeep, you may have to pull it back a bit to see the 5/16Th machine screw heads that you need to unscrew to accomplish this.

Be careful not to pull the carpet back too far. It may be on the verge of being a bit dry rotted and you do not want to tear it.

I would have loved to use a ratchet and socket set to remove these screws.

Unfortunately, the rubber on the shifter boot was too stiff to pull back, so I had to use a 5/16 combination wrench to get at them. This is a very tedious and aggravating task, but it needs to be done. So get busy and stop your griping. Yes. I am talking to myself here, but it is good advice, so you can take it and run with it.

Now that you have all those screws out, you can lift the shifter boot up and off of the shifter lever. It is best if you push it up from the bottom so that you do not tear the rubber boot.

Let us try to fix the original problem without creating another. Of course, if that boot is on it's last leg, now would be a good time to replace it.

As you can see, in my case, the 4X4 shifter came off and out with the shifter boot. If you look at the inside of the shifter, you will see the shifter clip still inside the shifter.

And if you take a very close look, you can see that it is a bit rusted, and the "tooth" that holds it to the shift-lever, is missing.

By the way, if you would like to take a closer look at any of the images on this page, all you have to do is click on the one you want to take a closer look at and a larger image will open up in a separate window.

After you take the 4X4 shifter handle/lever out of the boot, you still need to remove the clip from the shifter handle. As you can see, the clip has retainer clips that hold it into the shifter. It has one on each side. To push them in, you will need a Reverse Flux Double Clamp Pliers.

I'm just kidding, but they should make a tool for this job. It took me a while, but I found out that when you push one retainer clip in, and pull it a little with a pair of pliers, you can push the other one in too. Then just wiggle it out.

I did a side by side picture of the new and old shifter clips. As I was telling you before, the only clips I could find where for the T-4 and T-5 transmissions on the Jeep CJ, and I could not find a clip that was specifically for the AX-15 Transmission.

If you want to pick a nit, you can see that there are slight variations to the two clips, a nip here and a tuck there, but for the most part, this new dog will hunt. So let's go ahead and use it.

Warning: Do Not Jump Ahead and Jam The New Clip Up Into The Shifter Handle!

If you like to cuss and make things difficult for yourself, go ahead and put the new clip into the shifter handle. Then try to put it on the transfer case shift-lever. You may win that fight, but you will bust a knuckle or two. Now if you want to do it the easy way, then you need to do this...

We are going to put the clip on the transfer case shift lever first. Ta-Dah!

Take a close look at the transfer-case shift-lever to your left. Note that it has a couple of cut out grooves on it? Why two? I do not know.

You only need the bottom one. So if you put the clip on the first groove, like this image on the top right, you are wrong. Try again.

The clip needs to go over both grooves and you need to make sure that the "teeth" are gripping each side. Left and Right. Not top and bottom.

This will put the 4X4 shifter lever retaining clips on the top and bottom.. You need to get that part correct. Otherwise, when you put it all back together, your shifter lever will be all sorts of Bass Ackwards. It may work, but it will look We Todd Did. (Say "We Todd Did" out loud three times and you may figure it out.)

It is best to use a flat tip screwdriver to help pry the clip over the first groove. Or, if you put it on wrong the first time, it helps you to pry it off, so that you can put it on correctly.

I did not know it at the time I replaced mine but they make an Omix-Ada 18885.33 Manual Trans Shift Handle Insulator that goes over the clip and is supposed to make the handle fit more snug. Mine now has a lot of play in it and I will be getting this insulator to correct that issue.

Now we can go ahead and put it all back together.

One thing you may wish to do, before you put your shifter lever over the top of the new clip, is to take some black electric tape, and go around the very top and very bottom of the new clip a few times. Leave the retaining clips exposed.

I did not do this, but I wish I had. After you put the handle on, there is a bit of "Play" between the handle and the clip. If you wrap the top and the bottom of the clip with a few layers of tape, it should take out the "Play."

They do make a "Clip Cover" to do this. But I did not know that until after I completed this project. I figure that if you put some tape on the top and bottom, of the newly in place clip, you should be alright.

One thing I did before putting the boot back on, was to put the shifter knob back on the lever and run it through the gears. Just to make sure...

Well, your almost done.
If you tested out the shifter and your happy with the results, you can go ahead and take that shifter knob back off and reapply the boot. Make sure you do not screw down the carpet as you go. Once you get it all screwed down, you can tuck the carpet under the first fold of the rubber boot to hide the screws.

I added a dab of grease to the threads on the shifter levers. It seemed like a good idea. Then I replaced my ratty old shifter knobs back on to the shift levers. I did not have the foresight or the funds to buy new, cool, shifter knobs like you did.

Well it looks like we are all done here. If you had any problems, it wasn't my fault. You're the one who bought a Jeep. So just look at what you did as a labor of love. And Jeeps need a lot of love.
