Jel

If you have never seen Jel (Jeffery 'Jel' Logan) perform, prepare to be absolutely blown away.

To understand what he has accomplished, you have to know about his instrument. Jel uses an MPC, which is basically a machine used to collect music samples, drum beats, and any type of sounds, and organize them into backing tracks. This has been used extensively in Hip-Hop recordings, and to produce backing tracks for many contemporary artists.

Traditionally, this is all done beforehand and programmed peice by peice into the machine, and when the composition is done it is just the matter of hitting the play button.

Jel, on the other hand, takes a totally opposite approach.

He loads his MPC full of samples, and then uses the 16 touch pads to play his compositions on the fly, converting what was once a music production tool into a fully expressive musical instrument. The results are just mind-blowing!
