Jembie Halloween Top 10 Movies

My Personal favourite Top 10 Movies for Halloween

I am going to share with you my own personal favourites for Halloween.
For me a Halloween film doesn't particularly have to be really scary. It is all about the imagery and what the story and the characters bring to mind.
I know that everyone has different tastes and likes and dislikes. This is brilliant because if we all liked the exact same things Life would be Soooo Booooring!

Some of the titles in my list might not fit with everyone's ideals. Some are scary. Some are Bloody and Gorey and a couple don't fit in to anything associated with Halloween images.
Starting with Number 10 - We will countdown to my Number 1 Top Movie for Halloween EVER!!

I want this lens to be as interactive as possible and I want everyone to tell me what they think of my choices and even to reply with what YOUR top 10 would be!
Thanks and Enjoy!

Here are the 10 movies from my list

No 10 - The Blair Witch Project

jembie blair witch halloween moviesThis is my #10 Favourite film for Halloween. I know it isn't the scariest movie of all time but in the right atmosphere with the lights down, curtains closed and a few flickering candles casting shadows around the room, this film can have you jumping about all over the place.

We all know what the movie is about - Supposedly 3 film students travel to Maryland to make a student film all about a local Urban legend - The Blair Witch. They went into the woods to find the Blair Witch, and never came back.
Then a year later, their film and video equipment was found in the woods. The footage was compiled and made into a movie.

At the time with all the hype of the movie it was a pretty interesting and unique concept. It took me a while to realise that the story wasn't actually true.
I know I really believed that these 3 students really were lost in the woods. Until that is I saw Helen Donahue being interviewed on TV!

Number 9 - Interview with the Vampire

I think this is one of the first Vampire movies I ever saw. I think it is scary in that it is quite dark and eerie. Again watch it alone in a darkened room and you will soon be hugging your cushions.

The movie opens with a young journalist who follows a man through the streets and they end up in an anonymous room. The journalist (Played by Christian Slater) starts to interview the man, the stranger tells him that he is a vampire, He is also over 200 years old. The journalist doesn't believe him, but after the man proves it's true, he tells his story:
The story of Louis who, in 18th century New Orleans was 24. The owner of an estate and a widower already. One night, he was found by Lestat, a vampire, who bit him. But even after becoming a vampire, life wasn't fun for Louis until one night he met a little girl, Claudia, who would change his existence forever.
The movie has a great cast - Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and a very young Kirsten Dunst.

No 8 - The Ring

I have only just recently seen The Ring. After all the hype about it I never got round to it.
Its not really the story that's the scary part but sit alone in the dark watching it and it plays on your emotions. Especially if the phone rings while you are watching it, now that will REALLY make you jump!

The story - A disturbing video appears to hold the power of life and death over those who view it. The video is full of bizarre and haunting images, and after watching it, many viewers receive a telephone call in which they are warned they will die in 7 days.
A handful of teenagers who watched the tape while spending a weekend at a cabin in the mountains laugh at their impending doom, but as predicted, they all die suddenly on the same night. Rachel, the aunt of one of the teens, is a journalist who has decided to investigate the matter and travels West with her son, Aidan, a troubled child who has been drawing pictures of strange and ominous visions. Rachel managed to find the cabin in the woods and watches the video herself; afterward, she receives the same phone call, and realizes she must solve the puzzle of the video and the person behind it within the 7 days.

No 7 - Friday the 13th

Friday 13th is the ultimate cult classic Horror movie. It is one of those films that it isn't what happens on screen that makes you jump, It's what doesn't happen. It sets up a scene and you think you know what's coming but then nothing happens so when Scary Jason Vorhees does appear you really do jump out of your skin because it caught you off guard.
After Friday 13th, Jason appeared in several more Movies and spin offs. He even appeared in a movie with Freddie Krueger entitled Freddie Vs Jason and then there was a ridiculous futuristic Movie in 2001 Jason X which wasn't in the least bit scary it was more laughable.

We all know the story don't we? - Teens go to Camp Crystal Lake for a Camp out in cabin 13 but what they don't know is that a little boy drowned there because the councilors weren't paying attention and his name was Jason Vorhees. Now he comes back for revenge on his birthday "Friday The 13th"! to kill the councilors.

No 6 - Arachnophobia

I had to put this in the list. I am a massive Spider hater and watching this film really puts the willies up me! My problem is though that even though I know a movie is going to scare me and probably give me nightmares, I still feel compelled to watching. Even if I am sat watching from behind a cushion I will still carry on right to the end.

A large South America Spider is accidently transported in a crate with a dead body to America where it mates with a local spider. Soon the residents of a small California town disappear as the result of spider bites from the deadly spider offspring. It's up to a couple of doctors with the help of an insect exterminator to annihilate these Mutant Spiders before they take over the entire town!

Do Halloween Movies have to be Scary?

As you can see from my list of favourite Halloween movies, I don't particularly go straight for jump out of your skin scary films. I don't think Halloween has to be full of blood curdling screams watching behind the sofa. I think you can have fun and a laugh too. There has to be a bit of Blood and Gore in there as well just to add the final edge.

What do you the reader prefer. Should there have been more classic Christopher Lee in there or more Flesh eating Zombies?

No 5 - SAW

Saw DVDThis is one of my all time favourite movies so I think it deserves to be in the top 5 of Halloween movies.
There are 7 movies in this series that tell 1 story, almost like 7 episodes of a TV mini-series but I am using placing first film in this list but I believe you have to watch the whole lot of 7 movies to get it properly. The whole story is so ingenious and full of twists and turns and lots of surprises along the way.
The first one however was unique so you have to go with that one as the scariest and Goriest of them all. I think as you go along you kind of get used to it and de-sensitize to it somewhat.

The film starts when 2 men wake up at opposite sides of a dirty, toilet block. They are chained by their ankles to pipes. In the middle of the room is a dead man loosely clutching a hand-held tape player and a handgun. The men both find a tape in their pocket. They play the tapes. They have a task: 1 of the men must kill the other by 6pm, or his wife and daughter will die. They find hacksaws in a toilet, and try to cut the chains, but it doesn't work. They are the two newest victims of the Jigsaw Killer. As the movie goes on we begin to see a bigger picture unfold.

I seriously recommend you see all 7 movies and I would try and watch them altogether in a Marathon screening :)

No 4 - The Rocky Horror Picture Show

I know that The Rocky Horror isn't really a Scary film but I think it's a great fun movie for Halloween. It definitely has some great Costume ideas. If you are going to dress up for Halloween you may as well go the whole hog and go as Frank-n-Furter.
Also lots of Cinemas all over the world have Midnight showings of the movie for Halloween - Don't forget to take your props with you.

The film is about high school Sweethearts - Brad & Janet - Who are on their way to see their old Science teacher to tell him they are getting married when their car breaks down. They go to a nearby Castle to ask to use the phone but little do they know this is no ordinary Castle and the inhabitants are no ordinary People...

The show has a cult following even now - After nearly 40 years. The stage show has been ongoing all over the world and regularly tours all corners of the globe.

The songs from the show are all iconic now. The Timewarp is a cult classic that has become a party Favourite and you have to agree is completely Timeless!

Number 3 - The Grudge

I think The Grudge is one of the most terrifying scary movies I have ever seen. It starts quite slowly and completely catches you off guard when it makes you jump for the first time. I was gripped all the way through and I slept with the light on for about a week afterwards which is when you know the film has done its job. I Would definitely recommend this movie if you haven't seen it already.
I don't actually think the sequel stood up to the first movie and I have yet to see the 3rd but I might make that change this Halloween.

The Story - Karen Davis is an American Nurse. She moves to Tokyo for work and encounters a supernatural spirit in the house where she tends to a patient. This spirit possesses its victims. A series of horrifying and mysterious deaths start to occur, with the spirit passing its curse onto each victim. Karen must now find away to break this spell, before she becomes its next victim.

No 2 - The Nightmare before Christmas

I love this movie so much. It's great because you can watch it at Halloween and then at Christmas too. Tim Burton is a great Film-maker and I could have filled this lens full of Tim Burton movies but I resisted the temptation.
I know you don't expect the Number 2 Halloween movie to be animated but this is a great film that inspires wonderful Halloween costumes.

This is what happens - Jack Skellington is the pumpkin king of Halloween Town. He is bored with doing the same thing every year for Halloween. One day he stumbles into Christmas Town, and is so taken with the idea of Christmas that he tries to get the resident bats, ghouls, and goblins of Halloween town to help him put on Christmas instead of Halloween -- but alas, they can't get it quite right.

No 1 - A Nightmare on Elm Street

It had to be my Number One Film for Halloween. I am talking about the Original number 1 Film in the series. The one with the amazing Robert Englund as Freddie Krueger.
Nightmare on Elm street was the first horror movie I ever saw. I was 13 years old and I watched it with my Mum. I have loved Horror movies ever since. Scary, Gorey, Eerie You name it I love them all. This is a special one for me though and as each sequel was released I loved them too.
I went to see number 5 with a group of friends at a local small cinema. After the film we all went for Pizza, with lots of Olives!
I wasn't happy when recently "Rebooted" the movie. How ever much they try, they will never get a Fred Kreuger as good as Robert Englund!

This is how the first film started - On Elm Street, Nancy Thompson and a group of her friends including Tina Gray, Rod Lane and Glen Lantz are being tormented by a killer with sharp razored fingers in their dreams. Nancy finds out that his name is Freddy Krueger. Nancy must think quickly, as Freddy tries to pick off his victims one by one. When he has you in your sleep, who is there to save you?

Great choices. I'd add the Dark Shadows movies and Disney's original Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Plus the old silent monster movies for atmosphere

Love that you included the video of your son's production. Great list. Of course, I'd have to include the now-ancient originals such as Frankenstein, Dracula, and the rest of the Chaney-Lugosi-Karloff triumvirate. :) Congratulations on making it to the finals round in the Happy Halloween contest, too.
