Arizona Ghost Towns

Jerome Arizona is considered one of Arizona's ghost towns. While over 400 whole people live in Jerome, it once was populated with over 15,000 people at one time. The diminishing population was due to the closure of the mines. Today Jerome exists primarily due to tourism. It is a quaint and adorable town on the side of the hill, accessible by windy roads only, but a definite must see!

Visting Jerome Arizona

If you are taking a vacation to Arizona, you must travel north and visit the historic mining town of Jerome. Jerome and Sedona aren't far apart, so plan to stay in one or the other town.

Jerome is located along the edge of Mingus Mountain on Cleopatra Hill. Jerome was built on the side of the hill due to the copper mine that once had been opened on that same hill. Building a mining camp for miners to easily walk to work, was par for the course in those days (late 1800s). But then the mining camp developed into a town, then an official city. But after World War II, when the need for copper diminished, the copper mine closed down and all the people within Jerome had to find work somewhere else.

Jerome didn't find resurrection until the late 60s and 70s when hippies discovered the place as an inexpensive place to live far away from civilization. Those same hippies, many of whom still live in Jerome, actually saved the town and its remaining historic buildings. Some of the old timers who never moved out also created a historical society and began collecting Jerome artifacts, properties and they even built a museum.

Jerome is thought to be haunted as is its hotels. Many people come to Jerome just to have a haunted experience. Whether it is haunted or not, the town is cool and cute. The views in the town are amazing. When not shopping, there is often live music and dancing in one of Jerome's main street bars.

There are also lots of great places to eat in Jerome. Many of the restaurants have outside seating so you can enjoy the incredible views of Sedona and the Verde Valley.

If you are into funky cool historic towns, then you will love Jerome.
