Hotels in the Wickedest Town in the West

Jerome, Arizona hotels must contend with over thousands more visitors a year than there are residents. With less than 500 residents, this small town houses some of the best artisans in the country. If you're planning a trip to this city once known as The Wickedest Town in the West and now known as The Largest Ghost City in America, you won't be disappointed. It's legendary status as a once prospering copper mine that nearly burned itself to the ground has led to its reinvention as a wonderful community of uncommon artists and shopkeepers. There are two fine hotels within Jerome, Arizona, and they'd be glad to have you.

Jerome Arizona Has More Than Hotels

Don't forget the Bed & Breakfasts

There are several charming Bed & Breakfasts in Jerome. Most have private baths and some offer patios and wonderful views as most of the homes in Jerome were built on the side of Cleopatra Hill.

The Cottage Inn

Two spacious suites available with private baths.

Ghost City Inn

Reportedly haunted by the spirits of old miners and their families, this Bed & Breakfast offers a selection of six rooms, all with private baths and each decorated in a different theme. A reported favorite? The Northern Exposure Room done in the style of a log cabin.

Heavenly View Bed & Breakfast

This is one of the newest buildings in Jerome, having been built only 10 years ago. Great gardens, a fish pond and two spacious rooms to reserve.

Hillside House Bed & Breakfast

One mother-in-law apartment within an historic Jerome home. Remodeled and done in crisp whites and bright colors.

Mile High Grill and Inn

Seven rooms, each done in different colors and styles. The rooms look absolutely charming!

The Miner's Cottage

Rent one of two suites or the whole house. Each suite is done in hard-wood floors and has its own stone fireplace.

The Surgeon's House

Very beautiful home divided into three suites, each with a private bath.

Bring Walking Shoes

Jerome is literally a city built on the side of a mountain with a 30% grade. While there is street parking, it can be difficult to get on weekends and most visitors park in one of several parking lots available at the lower end of the main shopping section or near the top. Either way, you're going to do a whole lot of walking. Jerome is like several hills in San Francisco stacked one atop the other. Some of the shops hang off the side of the hill which makes for great views while shopping but wobbly knees if you're afraid of heights.

My Experience in Jerome

The most incredible indoor and outdoor art galleries

I moved to Arizona the end of 1997. Having relocated from the mild, but constantly soggy, city of Portland, Oregon, I immediately loved my new home. Who wouldn't with palm trees everywhere and birds chirping soft, sweet melodies while the ever-present sun bathes you in warmth? Within a few months, we'd explored our surroundings - the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Tuscon, Flagstaff, Indian monuments, mountains, and the small number of lakes. The question I was often asked when people would discover I was relatively new to the area was whether or not I had been to Jerome.

Once mentioned, it never went away."Jerome", they said.
"You must get to Jerome."

My husband and I made the 135 mile drive from our home just outside Phoenix in about two hours. There's not a lot of activity between Phoenix and Jerome - mostly flat, dry earth sprinkled with cactus and distant mountain views. There's the occasional Indian monument to visit along the way. When we arrived, we felt we'd found a hidden gemstone buried amongst the dry, dusty desert. I've been back five times.

Bikers Hangout

If you play live music, they will come

"The motorcyclists are now older and tamer, but they still prompt locals to wonder out loud whether Jerome is a biker town with an artist problem, or an artist town with a biker problem. Either way, Jerome finally seems to be coming into its own."

There's not a day I have been to Jerome that the outside of the Spirit Room at the Connor Hotel hasn't been jam-packed with bikers. The winding highway leading to Jerome is a common route for motorcyclists and this bar offers cold drinks, live music and billiards.
What more could you want?

Such a Rich History

Bikers always know where the best views are and they don't travel to Jerome for nothing. Arizona is filled with some of the most vibrant back roads and highways. This was also the home of the $1,000,000,000 copper mine. Not many cities have such an amazing history.

A community of artists and ghosts

Jerome, Arizona boasted 15,000 residents in its prime. Once the mines could no longer sustain the residents, the city's population dwindled. A few "spirits" may have stuck around. The big question: is Jerome haunted? Some say yes - even the manager at the Ghost City Inn Bed and Breakfast.

Experience Jerome in its Heyday

Under a Copper Moon

Amazon Price: $13.46 (as of 12/29/2009)Buy Now

Under a Copper Moon was published in 2007 and tells the fictional tale of a young girl who arrives in Jerome, Arizona, in 1894 to marry a man she's never met. Inez quickly discovers the seedier side of a town struggling with the growth brought on by its booming mining operation and all the gambling, prostitution, and crime that rode in on its coattails.

A Photographer's Dream

Views from Jerome Arizona Hotels

Artists are drawn to Jerome for its supportive community, its distance from all things suburban, and its surrounding, breathtaking beauty. Photographers often visit Jerome to get amazing scenery shots from the top of Cleopatra Hill or to capture stills of an era long gone but still evident in Jerome. Crumbling buildings, abandoned houses, and old vehicles are weaved amongst the revitalized galleries, the kitschy diners, and the back gardens of every home.

Parting Words

Have you been? Would you go? Let me know, or just say hi.

One final tip since you made it all the way down the page - Park at the bottom of Jerome's main strip and work your way up. It will be much easier to walk down that big hill at the end of the day to get to your car rather than having to walk up when you suddenly realize you've walked for hours already.
