Jerry Clower ~ The Beginning
After Jerry graduated from high school he joined the Navy where he had been awarded three medals; American Campaign with two bronze service stars, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, and World War II Victory Medal. When Clower was discharged from the Navy he enrolled at the Mississippi State University to study agriculture. Clower graduated in 1951 and worked as a salesman, first for a seed company and then for a fertilizer company (Mississippi Chemical). Clower had a great sense of humor and he soon became well known for his funny stories which he used to help increase his sales.
In 1970 Clower gave a speech for the Alabama Dairy Convention. After his speech he was told that he was very funny and that he should go into comedy. Clower decided to tape record some of his speeches. On one of these recordings Jerry told his now famous Coon Hunt story. Edwin Wilkes and Bud Andrews heard the recording and asked Clower to re-tell the story so that they could get a better sound quality. To make a short story of it MCA Records released the recording and it eventually made Platinum!
In the beginning Clower was selling his recordings wherever he went to make a speech. But when some of his stories were broadcast on Nashville's WSM radio executives from MCA Records contacted him to offer a recording contract.
Jerry Clower was 45 years old when he signed on with MCA and his Yazoo City, Mississippi Talkin' hit the top 20 country music chart and stayed there for more than seven months!

HEE HAW
Back in the 1970s, when I was just a "young'n", one my family's favorite television shows was Hee Haw.Hee Haw was a country music comedy variety show with Roy Clark and Buck Owens sharing in the job of hosting. The regular cast was great too and included Minnie Pearl, Grandpa Jones, The Hee Haw Honeys, Junior Samples and many more.
Each Hee Haw episode featured a popular country music performer as a guest. The guest would perform songs, but they would also get involved with the comedy sketches and jokes.

I remember commercials back in the 70s or early 80s about Jerry Clower and his unique brand of humor and I thoroughly enjoyed them. His act was clean and family-oriented, something we really need more of today.

I used to love to tell the Marcel Ledbetter stories. Would you believe that Jerry Clower was actually in our little town of Pendleton, SC. I was one of about 2 dozen people who showed up to hear him. Great lens!
