Jesus Calling by Sarah Young
The Devotional Book Jesus Calling is not your typical devotional. THANK GOD! If you want a daily devotional with a few happy thoughts, you're going to be disappointed. If you want a Devotional that's 10 pages of preaching every day - wrong again. But... If you want the a daily encounter with God that leaves you feeling like you know what He is thinking - you'll be glad you read Jesus Calling. Sarah Young has authored a devotional which deserves to redefine the term.
Life Is A Journey, and it should be a great one! A Daily Devotional should provide a few signs along the way: "Rough Road Ahead", "Stay Right", or "U Turns Allowed". I know I have definitely needed signs on many occasions.
God never intended life to be a constant circus; fending off lions, jumping through hoops of fire, or flying through the air hoping someone will catch you, because you know there's no net. Life ain't perfect. So, when you have one of those days, like I did - with an unclear map, like mine was, and all your emotions seem conflicting, like mine did. It's amazing how on that very day, you open Jesus Calling Enjoying Peace in His Presence, as I just did... and it reads:
"...You wonder how you can possibly find your way through that maze. Then you remember the One who is with you always, holding you by your right hand. You recall My promise to guide you with My counsel, and you begin to relax..."
This is one Daily Devotional that feels personal, and there's a reason for that. The book was lifted from Sarah's own personal journalings. Your journaling may reflect more of your own temperament, and your own thoughts. Sarah confides that for years her devotions and the journal entries that came with them were that same way. Then she decided to allow her monologues with God to become dialogues with God. That is a simple sentence, but not a simple project. Invest some serious time using Jesus Calling and you will see how well it worked. So definitely give it a go, and definitely begin here.

Jesus Calling Thomas Nelson Publishers
Thomas Nelson is the publisher, and this is their book trailer, so it's just a bit of a commercial. but you'll see that even a religious Devotional can have worldwide impact. There's no arguing with the content of the message that's for sure. You don't sell millions of copies if the book doesn't live up to the hoopla. For once you really cannot overstate the impact!
I believe it is because the work is excellent, but I think you'll agree that the daily approach is best if you want that ongoing impact and if you want to develop the habit of inviting God's opinions into your life. I love what Zig Ziglar says, "I read two things every day--The newspaper, and the Bible, because I want to know what both sides are up to!"

HOW OFTEN DO YOU STUDY THE BIBLE?
Bible Study Begins With Hearing From God
The Bible is a fabulous book. It is arguably the most trusted source for knowing what God has to say about millions of subjects. It is the most complete reference work for the life of Christ and the early New Testament Church. It is the most historically accurate document when referring to events involving the historical characters listed in it. The Bible is the most complete record of ancient Jewish history. The Bible contains thousands of personal promises from God, to you. The Bible contains thousand of prophecies, many in the most minute detail, which have proven true throughout history. No other book in history more clearly pictures a loving God, with the best intent for humanity, DEVOTIONALS are tools you can use to read the Bible in such a way that you can apply it to your life, so it brings meaning and fulfillment to you on an individual basis.
Do you read your Bible? How often? When you read it, do you feel like you truly got something from it that applies to your life? Is the Bible REAL to you?
Billions of people read the Bible. The Barna Group, an international Christian polling organization, states most Americans own a Bible - estimates are that 92% of all American households own at least one. Out of those who own a Bible, the average number of Bibles owned is 3. It is worth noting this figure includes not only those who consider themselves Practicing Christians, but also hundreds of thousands of "non-believers" and atheists.
That's just ownership, but what actual Bible knowledge? Despite what appears to be a very favorable statistic of Bible ownership, the use, and application of the contents of the Bible are severely lacking. Secular Pollster Gallup, relates the following:
Gallup annually researches and tracks American's attitudes towards religion in their study titled, "How Are American Christians Living Their Faith?" which is always revealing and always worth the read.
Christian Media and Church Trend Researcher George Barna has also documented a lack of Bible knowledge in the United States:
Bible ignorance has unfortunately been a problem ever since Moses read from the stone tablets in God's handwriting. Knowing what God thinks is an excellent goal. Sarah never pretends to speak for God, she understands this book is not the Bible and she never claims that her words are inspired in the same way. The beauty of Jesus Calling is that you can sense that her innocence and willingness to be open to God's voice herself has come through in the book. In the end, Sarah didn't inspire it, and it isn't autographed by the Apostle Paul, but you can hear the voice of God when you read it... and you don't have to try very hard.

- Only half of adults interviewed nationwide could name any of the four Gospels of the New Testament.
- Just 37% of those interviewed could name all four Gospels.
- Only 42% of adults were able to name as many as five of the Ten Commandments correctly.
- Seven in ten were able to name the town where Jesus was born, but just 42% could identify him as the person who delivered the Sermon on the Mount. 9

Christian Media and Church Trend Researcher George Barna has also documented a lack of Bible knowledge in the United States:
- 38% of Americans believe the entire Bible was written several decades after Jesus' death and resurrection. While this is true of the New Testament, the entire Old Testament was written hundreds (and in some cases thousands) of years before the birth of Jesus Christ.
- 12% of adults interviewed actually believe Noah's wife was Joan of Arc.
- 49% believed the Bible teaches money is the root of all evil. The verse often blamed for this idea is misquoted. It actually states,
"...the love of money..." is said to be, "... the root of all types of evil..." [1 Timothy 6:10]
- not the money itself, or even owning lots of it. In other words - you can love money, even if you have none, and that love is STILL evil. - 75% believe that the Bible teaches that God helps those who help themselves.
