JET JML 1014VSI 10-Inch-by-14-Inch Variable Speed Indexing Mini Lathe

After perhaps a month of reading and comparing mini lathes, I choose to buy the JET 1014VS. I am totally satisfied with this lathe and look forward to "turning" each new project.
The 1014VS is a stout machine that actually hums at higher speeds - No vibration, just smooth operation.
My lathe did arrive with a broken control box, perhaps the manufacturer will retrofit with a metal appliance someday. Replacing the control box was relatively easy and the Customer Support lady was very helpful.

JET JML 1014I 10 Inch X 14 Inch Indexing Mini Lathe

For years I had been using a large, old, Delta lathe at work but since my retirement (ya, right) I no longer have that access. I have had to add power tools to my crib to accomplish the inventions and ideas that come into my head. I thought the Jet Mini lathe might be a bit too small but I was wrong. This lathe may not be large in size but it can do some pretty big work if and when you want it to. I do bowl turnings mostly and some spindle stuff and in both cases it has performed equal to if not better than the big Delta I used in the past. With the addition of the bed extension, a new PSI chuck, and slight modification to the setup I have turned up to 60 inch spindles and turned bowls out of soap stone with ease. Highly recommended!!!

It's as if Jet designers mind-melded with turners everywhere and came up with this lathe, packed with power and all the features a woodturner could want. There's an enormous 42 inches between centers, giving the ability to turn table legs, baseball bats and anything else you fancy.

This is a supremely solid lathe, made beautifully with cast iron beds and legs with special cast webbings that accept 2-by4s so you can easily add a sturdy shelf for tools and accessories. You could add sandbags to the shelf, but quite frankly, it isn't necessary, as this is one of the truly vibration-free lathes we've ever met: You'll feel nothing at the tool rest.

The 16-inch swing - that's double the distance from the bed to the center, or the largest diameter piece you can turn -- allows you to turn large bowls and platters on the faceplate. There are two speed ranges to choose from, so if you find you need extra torque on a particular piece, adjusting the belt is a simple task and takes just a few seconds. Just loosen the locking handle to let up belt tension and move the belt. Done. The upper range (0-3200 rpm) gives you speed; the lower range (0-1200 rpm) gives you terrific torque, perfect for large or long pieces. The noise level at both ranges is very, very low, so it's perfect for the home turner whose shop is in the basement or attached garage. Be sure to have 220-volt electrical service in place.

We particularly like the cam-lock lever mechanisms on the headstock, the nice long tool rest and tailstock, making quick tool-free work of any changes you want to make.

JET 709163 Mini Lathe Turning Set, 5-Piece

I ordered this set several weeks back while it was on backorder. Found another set locally for about half the price, but it was of extremely low quality, and I was concerned that the Jet set would be of similar sub-standard construction.

The Jet tools arrived and they are great. There's a sticker on the box that says made in Sheffield, England, and the red box looks suspiciously like the red box on my set of full-sized Sorby tools. Come to think of it, The handles look an awful lot like the Sorby's too. The same set from Sorby goes for about $120 retail.

A little bit of honing, and they went to work. Nice balance.. a pleasure to work with.

We like this one by Jet because it's supremely lightweight, and that's good for your lathe's motor, but it's also tough as nails. It expands and contracts smoothly with lever action, expanding to grip the inside diameter of the bottom of a bowl you're gouging or contracting to clamp securely around a dowel threaded through the spindle and destined to be a Shaker-type peg.

The 2-inch jaws are perfect for smaller projects, including bowls, vases, small plates, finials, pegs and other work done on a mini- or midi-lathe.

Bosch 1274DVS 6.6 Amp 3-Inch by 21-Inch Variable Speed In-Line Belt Sander with Cloth Dust Bag

Well-executed design combined with solid, reliable performance make this Bosch belt sander a tool with noticeable performance advantages. The Bosch features a magnesium-and-plastic housing that's lightweight yet durable. The tool is nicely balanced, comfortable, and easy to operate--important features in a tool that's often used for long periods of time for removing large amounts of stock. The Bosch comes with a cast-aluminum platen--so there's none of the warping that affects stamped-steel platens--and it sands perfectly flat right out of the box. Like many of the sanders in this class, the motor on the 1274 is aligned with the belt edge to allow flush sanding into corners. The tool's only drawback is that visibility is limited when sanding into tight corners, but that's a small minus when weighed against all the pluses. The belt-changing system works well--we didn't suffer any spring pinches--and the tracking adjustment tracks the new belt quickly and keeps it in place. There's a variable-speed dial built right into the trigger switch, which makes adjusting the belt speed fast and convenient. Wood magazine tested 10 3-by-21-inch sanders and liked the 1274DVS best. We agree that it's a great tool.

Wilton 99179 1/3 Horsepower Benchtop Oscillating Spindle Sander

What a pleasure it is to sand on this oscillator, especially if you're accustomed to chucking a drum sander into your drill press. It's powerful, quiet and has a generous worktable, along with throat plates to match each size drum. Everything stores neatly on board the sander and keeps it ready to use.

The dust collection is probably our favorite feature; sanding like this makes a wicked mess, but just hook up your shop vacuum to the dust port, and nearly all the sawdust you make will get sucked away. Granted, it does make a strange sound as the spindle oscillates when you've got the vac running, but some ear protection isn't a bad idea anyway when your vac is on.

The oscillation really does a great job of removing stock when you're using a coarse grit, and with finer grit, you get a nice smooth finish, especially on scroll-sawn work.

For you furniture makers out there who find yourselves spending more time than you'd like setting up the mortising attachment on your drill press (then taking it off, again), JET's affordable benchtop mortiser ought to be a welcome addition to your woodshop's tool collection. Designed to take up to 1/2-inch chisel bits, JET's benchtop mortiser runs off a 1/2-horsepower induction motor. At only 44 pounds, the tool is sturdy but also easily maneuvered, plus it reverses on its base to allow for mortising in long stock. The 4-3/4-inch head stroke is great. Bits are easy to change. Just flip open the steel door on either side (these doors are made of flimsy plastic on some of the competition's models) to gain easy access to the chuck. And, thanks to the 4-inch chuck key, there's little chance of banging or scraping your knuckles while switching bits (a small touch, perhaps, but a nice one). We also like the quick-setting depth stop on this tool--as well as the removable toggle switch that keeps less-experienced (or child-size) hands out of harm's way. The mortiser's feed handle adjusts, too, so you can choose the most comfortable position for each application--another nice touch. Set on a heavy-duty cast-iron base with four predrilled mounting holes, this dependable machine allows any woodworker, from the beginner to the expert, to create fantastic-looking mortise-and-tenon joints.

When it comes to jointers, there aren't a lot of differences among the leaders in the market. Like other manufacturers, Jet uses heavy-duty cast iron in the fence, jointer base, and infeed/outfeed tables and offers a three-blade drum and built-in 4-inch dust port. Their design, however, features a couple of innovations that changed our "jointers are jointers" mindset. While the infeed tables in other models can only be raised or lowered with a rod or lever system, this machine's design allows you to adjust both of the feed tables by rotating smooth, industrial-style hand wheels. This feature lends itself to easier tapers and gives you more control when you need to take off precise measurements, like 1/64 of an inch, a setting that can frustrate woodworkers lifting the arms up or down on other machines. The fence glides extremely smoothly throughout its range of motion and tilts both ways, but, where other brands offer fixed stops only at 45 and 90 degrees, Jet's jointer adjusts to quickly reproduce multiple cuts at any angle you find necessary.
