Jet Li In A Chick FLick? Hero Certainly Was One.

Jet Li's Hero Is A chick flick, and there's no denying that. What makes this movie a chick flick is that it involves a love story and is appealing to women. That's it in a nutshell and I don't think you can argue with any weight otherwise.

Sure, the movie stars Jet Li and Maggie Cheung and is packed from scene to scene with action filled martial arts sequences that will leave you dazed, but the strength of the movie lies at its core. The story is about a love where the ultimate sacrifice is made. A story that has me almost in tears every time I watch it. That has got to be some movie, huh?

Yes! Here's what I thought of it...

chino pisces says:

To call it a chick flick implies that you mock this film's true essence. Hero is one of the greatest art films ever produced. Its not just a love story, it reflects the beauty of Chinese culture and the great sacrifices people had to make to in order to unify it. It also redefines the word 'hero' in more ways than one. When you say 'love story', which kind of love do you mean? Love between a man and a woman, or a love for one's country?

says:

I saw it in the theater, have the DVD and I like it a lot.

Ylliks says:

I've seen it a couple of times and I thought it was a good movie. No Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. But good.

drifter0658 says:

Yes, several times now. It is one of my favorite flicks.

No! Here's why I am interested or not in seeing it...

Tipi says:

No, I haven't seen it, but I sure would like to.

Sojourn says:

I haven't seen it but I'm considering it now.

JaguarJulie says:

I did not see this film -- but I think I've seen another Jet Li film. Not really into the martial arts -- more into the marital arts. ;)

GrowWear says:

Well, I'd have to be in the mood. This type of film is usually not what I am looking for in a movie, but I do see some movies in this genre. You have made it so that I will certainly be more likely than not to choose it at some point in time. Throughout this lens, you've convinced me that it has a strength to it, and that's important. :)

mysticmama says:

Nope and now that I know it is a chick flick...I'll be sure to stay away...I hate chick flicks...I don't even like when authors ruin a perfectly good detective or mystery novel with a bunch of mushy love scenes...ewwwwe...my idea of a great love story was Mikey and Malory in Natural Born Killers...lmao...I have all brothers and no sisters and 3 sons, no daughters...that should explaine why.

CCGAL says:

Not my style, chick flick or no.

julcal says:

I have no idea who this guy is and from the looks of it, so far, this doesn't sound like my kind of movie, but i'm keeping my mind open. Let's see how things evolve.

Jet Li's Hero: The Lowdown

Hero was released in China in 2002, and up to that point the movie was the most expensive to make as well as the highest grossing film in Chinese history. The film was not released in America until Quentin Tarentino presented it in August of 2004.

Although it was a critical success and performed reasonably well at the box office, the film was a discomfort to many who saw the film's political undertones as support for autocracy and a world lead by one power; China. Positive promotion of the film died off quickly and after three months in the U.S. it was released on DVD.

Personally, I saw the film as a masterful piece of art. The involvement of colors and the spectacular sets alone would make this movie worth full price of admission. Each martial arts sequence was choreographed with such vision and stunning precision that there is no denying the beauty of movement or the meaning of motion. Yet, as with all great movies, if all this was stripped away to let the story and its telling stand on its own, this work of art would be nothing short of breathtaking.

Two thousand years ago, there was no China. There were seven provinces which divided a population. And one warlord who dreamed of a unified people; one language, one law, one leader. To accomplish this, the warlord, Qin, sends his vast military machine to subdue the other six provinces. Ruthless, yet tactically efficient, his armies succeed wherever they appear.

Two warriors made homeless by Qin's armies, Broken Sword (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai) and Falling Snow (Maggie Cheung), meet and fall in love. Pledging the deepest of love for each other they dedicate their lives to gaining a home where there is no war, no swords, only peace. The two begin a journey to assassinate the king. The two grow inseparable as they study and hone their skills as swordsmen. Three years before the telling of the story, Falling Snow and Broken Sword make their assassination attempt and fail. In response to the attempt, Qin has the great hall in palace emptied, so no one can hide, wears his battle armor at all times, and forbids anyone to approach within one-hundred paces under penalty of certain and sudden death at the hands of his thousands of palace guards.

Ah, but what would a lethal edict be without loopholes?

The story is told via flashbacks during a conversation with Qin and an unknown Prefect whose name is Nameless (Jet Li). Nameless is allowed within ten paces of the king because he has presented the weapons belonging to the three most notorious assassins in the land to the Royal Court. By Qin's own law, any man who presents proof that he has killed two of the three assassins, Broken Sword, Falling Snow, and Sky, will be rewarded greatly and be hailed as a hero.

There are three different versions of the tale of Nameless' quest to protect the nation told. Each one steeped in intrigue and love. Only one is true.

It Makes Me Well Up

Given the movie was not promoted as a chick flick it would be hard to see it on that radar scope. But, I say that any woman who watches the movie would be moved by the great love story at the root of the plot. Therefore I say that Jet Li's Hero is indeed a chick flick.

Sojourn says:

I wouldn't have thought of 300 as a chick flick either but I cried like a baby at the end when the wife gets only her husband's necklace to give to her son. After seeing the YouTube video you shared (sad looks, soft music, crying, more crying, a hug, some more crying) I'd say Hero is a chick flick all the way.

drifter0658 says:

I certainly believe that it is. All 3 versions of the tale told to the king involve Falling Snow And Broken Sword's Commitment to each other. All three stories make reference to Broken Swords wishes that his and Falling Snow's swords will never be apart. And true story explores just how deep and tragic their love ends up being. Without spoiling it all together I'll quote this line from Falling Snow, "We will go home together."

No way, Monkeybrain! You're just a soft hearted pansy

says:

I cry really easily at sad moments in movies but I've never shed a tear for this one.
I really don't see the "chick flick" in it to be honest...

CCGAL says:

Still doesn't make me want to see it, sorry.

julcal says:

you haven't sold me yet. Violent chick flicks?

A Fan Video About Hero

These looks at the movie show some of the rich colors and beautiful sets, as well as the enriching choreography in the martial arts scenes.

Putting this on my list of movies to watch. When we were considering buying a surround sound system, the clerk demo'd this movie or one very similar and I was fascinated. I'd never seen one of the Jet Li movies before but the rich colors, the incredible attention to detail and the amazing action scenes certainly got my attention. Throw a love story in and I'm hooked. I'm such a sap....

Very entertaining and original topic. A five star lens! Where do you come up with all this stuff? If only there was a little TV window into your brain that we could all watch...lol You're an asset to Squidoo! I'm going to stumble this one! 5 stars!
  • kab Apr 19, 2009 @ 5:47 pm | delete
I've never seen it, so I can't say for sure. But my gut is saying it's not a chick flick.
  • GrowWear Apr 19, 2009 @ 8:32 am | delete
Well, since love can seize a man as well, we could call it a mick flick for man and chick. LOL The best one I have seen of this genre -- the martial arts, not the chick flick -- was....can't remember the name. Thinking Jet Li was in it -- boy, was he cold-blooded! The stunts, the photography...just beautiful. Added The French Lieutenant's Woman to the plexo. That's my favorite "chick flick." You gotta see it at least once, ladies. Drifter would enjoy it, too, methinks. :)
  • a_willow Apr 19, 2009 @ 8:13 am | delete
If this discussion intended to make me laugh? Well, I'm rolling! LMAO
  • Apr 19, 2009 @ 4:28 am | delete
I stay away from martial arts movies. I'm Chinese, but I don't get those super-human action sequences. Stuff like jumping 20 feet in the air while making 33.3 somesaults, landing on an upright toothpick, flying while spinning like a screw, bouncing against tree trunks like a pinball, then finally reaching into the air, in a leg-split and a loud "haaaaai yah!" to catch a fly. They just make me cringe and go "oh get real"

But as far as lens-making is concerned, I bow before you "mahs-ster"!
  • CCGAL Apr 18, 2009 @ 1:42 pm | delete
Loved this lens, although I am not one for martial arts movies.
  • julcal Apr 18, 2009 @ 12:02 pm | delete
The choreography in the clip was spectacular that alone is worth watching the movie. you haven't talked me into it being a chick flick. I'll reserve judgment until after I see it. This will be the very first martial arts movie I'll have seen.

    Great lens! 5* etc!
  • Ylliks Apr 18, 2009 @ 10:53 am | delete
I don't necessarily agree with you on it just being a chick flick, just because it had a love story. I do agree that this was an entertaining lens :)

Great lens; I really liked the video & appreciated the information about the movie. 5* :)
