Once upon a time there was a fish

jewelry making tips and fun

We would like to start our journaling here with you the audience.
As we ourselves explore new and fun things ...we of course stumble.
By sharing our stumbles and humor we hope to help anyone and everyone interested in jewelry making and selling.

Lets start from the beginning shall we?, once upon a time....

We wondered

1.- What jewelry making tools and supplies do we actually need?
we came to a general consensus that a basic jewelry making toolkit is a good start.
Why?,

because everyone is different, - fingers ( stringing beads )- eyes ( seed beads )- preferences ( right or left handed )- etc. and until you actually use your bead making tool kit to fashion a piece or ten, you won't really know for sure what you "need" to make your jewelry creating life easier.

So start with the following list of supplies and you will find yourself decorating all your friends and family with your new found jewelry fashions and designs.

jewelry making kit

essentials for making jewelry

This bead stringing list will hopefully help those beginning jewelry makers get started without breaking the bank.
Your starter jewelry kit

your starter jewelry wire
Artistic Wire 20-Gauge Silver Plated Non-Tarnish Silver Coil Wire,
25-Feet
your starter jewelry toggle clasp
19 Complete Antiqued Silver Pewter Toggle Clasps Square 14mm Loop, 22mm Long Bar, Jewelry Findings
your starter practice beads

Bead Stringing

making jewelry

2.- What do I use to string my beads?
your beginner jewelry kit as listed in the above links.
As you work you will become aware of your style of bead fashioning and what additional tools you might want.
your wire - this is a common non tarnish easy to use wire for stringing just about everything.
your clasps - I chose an economical starter pack. start there and upgrade to styles and sizes.
DO NOT scimp on your clasps. it is well worth it to spend a little more for a clasp that doesn't "turn" later on.
your beads - this type of bundle gives you a good idea of just how many different sizes of beads there are.
you will get a feel for bead sizes, shapes, and why you should think through a piece you might make instead of impulse buying a few of these and a few of those, which will leave you with a pile of beads and nothing you need to make the piece you finally get ready to make.

Bead Mix3.-What is it about bead shopping I should know?
DONT :-) Scenario: standing in Michaels or Hobby Lobby..oooo look at those..... CHA CHING..... be extra careful when you go to purchase beads try to have a plan. First you should probably utilize a good wholesale company that provides quality items, customer service and easy on the pocketbook pricing. Our suggestions and some favorites are gemmal.com - jewelrysupply.com - nirvanabeads.com - firemountaingems.com - did I mention you can also find tools on those sites. The second item would be don't buy alot of unnecessary beads with the thought in your mind of, ... Oh I will use these sometime.
We here at bead bait have baskets and cupboards of sometime beads.. :-)
It really is a much better idea to visualize a piece or color you want to start creating, then go looking for the beads- saves you time and money.

a bead board

and a comfy chair

4.- THE ABSOLUTE MUST FOR ANYONE BEADING... a bead board or ten. Get them cheap, design your pieces, string them when ready.
I cannot stress enough the importance of your bead board....and a comfortable chair....and a roomy table.
Back away from the TV tray...(unless CSI is on and your piece is already ready to string - but word of caution..beads in the chair ... not fun)

lighting

and Last but not at all least or the end...

5.- GOOD ...GREAT... FANTASTIC... lighting.
an Ottlight is great if you need light and have trouble seeing those tiny beads, but they can be pricey.
I have my own invention. A headflashlight and a detective style magnifying glass duct taped to a papertowel holder. Hey it works.

So until next time my friends, please email me with your questions, enjoy the tips and I will be back later with some more. Tales from the fish.
