The bead board, while not absolutely necessary, can make your life much easier. It has at least one channel (sometimes more) around the outside edge so that you can set up your beads in a pleasing pattern before stringing. Most bead boards will also have a few wells in the middle to store beads.
The board shown here has multiple channels for multi-strand necklaces and bracelets.
Select your beads and play with them until you find a pleasing design. String your beads (using string or wire), allowing 1 inch extra string or wire for clasp.
