How to Price Your Jewelry Designs

Figuring out how to price your designs is not one of the more glamorous parts of running a successful jewelry design business. In fact, it probably ranks with gluing your fingers together with E6000 for most of you. Pricing your designs can be tricky, especially if you design one of a kind pieces, but it is an essential step you must take to turn your hobby into a profitable business. Never fear, though. Once you understand the costs of your business, and what you expect to profit from your work, creating a formula to price your designs is a simple process.

Jewelry Making Tips

DIY: Make Your Own Light Box for $2 or Less
One of the most critical aspects of trying to sell your jewelry online is good photography. However, being able to light a piece properly to show the true color an beauty of it can be difficult. A lightbox is a great solution. It provides light diffusion and a uniform background against which to place your piece. They can be expensive though. There is a solution, costing as little as $2 (or free if you already have all the materials), using a cardboard box, posterboard and some tissue paper. This light box can be used with any light source, and even outdoors.

Marketing Your Jewelry Designs Online: Selling Without a Web Site
Selling your work online can be an easy and effective way to both make some extra money, and gain exposure for your work. But then there's SSL, ISPs, hosting, Linux, shopping carts?. It's not as daunting as it may seem though. There are simple ways to get started online without having to have your own web site.

Right Angle Weave

Right Angle Weave

1. To start the first row, sting 4 beads and tie the thread into a snug circle. Pass the needle through the first 3 beads again. (Maintain a firm tension to form the distinctive cross shape.)

2. Pick up 3 more beads(#5, 6, and 7) and sew back through the last bead of the previous circle and beads #5 and 6.

3. Pick up 3 more beads and sew back through #6 and the first 2 new beads. Continue adding 3 beads for each stitch until the first row is the desired length. You are sewing circles in a figure-eight pattern and alternating the direction with each stitch.

4. To begin row 2, sew through the last 3 beads of the last stitch on row 1, exiting the bead at the edge of one long side.

5. Pick up 3 beads and sew back through the bead you exited in figure 4 (the first "top" bead of row 1) and the first new bead.

6. Pick up 2 beads and sew back through the next top bead of the previous row and the last bead of the previous stitch.

Keep the thread moving in a firgure-eight pattern. Pick up 2 beads for the remaining stitches on the row. Don't sew straight between stitches.
