If you're new to making your own jewelry, and running into some difficulties, this article may contain some useful basic troubleshooting info. Make sure to visit the WigJig website for all your jewelry supplies - jewelry tools, jewelry wire, beads, and more!
The Technique
Things to Consider:
Don't get discouraged. Always start a new jewelry making project in practice wire and plan on discarding several practice pieces before graduating to your good jewelry wire and beads.
Choose the right jewelry wire. Wire that is too big is too hard to work with. Wire that is too small will easily bend out of shape with wear.
Always consider where the sharp end and the flat end are on your cut wire. When you are done making a wire component, all of the sharp ends need to end up in the trash can. Your finished piece should have only the flat ends of the cut wire.
Our best jewelry making instructions are in our Online Books. Try purchasing one of these online books for more detailed information. There are no shipping costs in purchase of an online book. These online books introduce jewelry making techniques that are slightly more advanced than the ones discussed here.
Consider purchase of a jewelry tool called loop closing pliers (bent closing pliers are best) for help in closing loops.
Consider purchase of a jewelry tool called nylon jaw pliers to help with straightening wire, and squeezing finished wire components. Squeezing the finished components helps to work harden the piece making the shape more permanent.
We offer a free newsletter. This newsletter will let you know when we add new jewelry making information to our web site. You can sign up for this free newsletter here. We also have a listing of the techniques discussions in our old newsletters. You can view these past articles here also.
We offer a lot of free jewelry designs in our WigJig University. Sometimes as you browse WigJig University, try starting from the last page of a series (earrings, necklaces, bracelets) instead of from the front. This way you will see our newest designs as we add new projects at the back.
