Finding Ephraim: Jewry in the Diaspora

Ranked #3,816 in Culture & Society, #83,872 overall

Finding Ephraim Introduction:

Although most people use the term Jew or Jewish people, these are generalized terms and actually should only refer to the tribe of Judah from which the term originated. And although I used the phrase "Jewry in the Diaspora" in all actuality it should be "Israel in the Diaspora." This page is a resource for people beginning to realize there connection to Israel. As one goes deeper into what that means, one will find that in the end these ethnic designations are superficial and a natural result of the social world.

See my article "Who Are We? A look at the American concept of Race and the Israel Phenomenon" linked at the end of this page.

Because of the persecution of the Jewish people many Jews throughout the centuries have either gone underground with there Jewish traditions or have left the way altogether. In some cases many Jews preferred to just assimilate into the nations in other instances they just continued to be Jews undercover, otherwise known as Crypto-Jews. Some of these particular people decided to spare their children the anti-semitic/anti-jewish persecution by just not telling them that they were Jewish, these too are considered Crypto-Jews. This lens is a resource I developed as a central hub for people looking for information on Jews in the Diaspora. Enjoy! Shalom

"Many Ashkenazi Jews later migrated, largely eastward, forming communities in non German-speaking areas, including Hungary, Poland, Belarus, Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine, Eastern Europe, and elsewhere between the 11th and 19th centuries. With them, they took and diversified Yiddish, a basically Germanic language with Hebrew influence." Wikipedia

Ladino, otherwise known as Judeo-Spanish, is the spoken and written Hispanic language of Jews of Spanish origin. It is also known as Judezmo, Dzhudezmo, or Spaniolit.

When the Jews were expelled from Spain and Portugal they were cut off from the further development of the language, but they continued to speak it in the communities and countries to which they emigrated.

What about Natives of the America's?

My European ancestors took themselves wives from the natives living in the "New World" and both my wife and I have either Navajo (Dine') and Cherokee ancestry. This became cause for research into the possible origins of the Native American tribes. Many of us African-americans are of Igbo descent, and are therefore Jews/Hebrews who descended from ancient Hebrews/Jews/Israelites who migrated into various areas of
North, West and Central Africa. Many of us also share Cherokee origin--and our churches have preserved many Hebraic/biblical customs and rituals. I am investigating my family's genetic ties to Igbo and other West African Hebrew populations.

In short, I GREATLY appreciate this post and will further delve into it when possible. Why? After discovering my Jewish roots -- Tribe of Judah and Isaachar -- about a decade ago (at age 50), my life has been totally transformed, giving me different focus and understanding in life ... overall, a delightful journey -- a quest.

Who Are We?

Who Are We?My goal in this article is to help people to think about evaluating who we think we are based on the attitudes we have towards other ethnic appearances and to un-color ourselves. I have spent a lot of time researching the major peoples of Israel exiled into the nations of the world in Finding Ephraim: Jewry in the Diaspora, such as: Ashkenazi, Sephardic, Mizrahi, and Maghrebim. After coming across Jeff Morton's website Hearing and Obeying that states, "Un-color yourself and know that you are the scattered House of Israel, re-gathering," it occured to me...
