Judy and Dan have co-authored this unique memoir about their experiences with cancer.

I have known Judy Gordon for about a decade. In 2003, when Judy was 55 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Judy had been a writer for years at that time. As the book title says, she fell apart when she got the diagnosis. So throughout the treatment process both she and Dan, her husband, kept a journal. Later they decided to publish parts of their journals and therefore they shared the writing of this memoir.

The good news is people can and do survive cancer. Judy's cancer was first diagnosed in 2003 and it is now 2008 - this picture was a recent one, showing her with hair. So the good news is - there is life after cancer, yeah!!

Breast Cancer Journey

Those facing cancer need to know it is alright to fall apart if they need to. They also need to know that reaching out to a support group can be essential to recovery.

What I remember about Judy and her cancer.

I know Judy through the Dances of Universal Peace in Denver. We have danced together pretty much on a weekly basis for many years. These dances are a form of spirituality or body prayer. For a time Judy was missing in action. Then she started coming to the dances wearing a scarf, it was obvious that her hair was missing. Then later after she got more comfortable, she came dancing with no scarf! We are a loving group of people and we loved her either way. Lesson - do not forget your support networks, they can be vital to recovery.

Also do not forget that when you are participating with your support group, this can give your caregiver a much needed respite. They need time alone and to self nourish as well.

The Heroics of Falling Apart: One Couple's Breast Cancer Journey - Wins Top Award in the 2008 Colorado Independent Publishers Association's EVVY Award Program. Judy and Dan's book wins First Place in Autobiography/Memoir category and is top point-earner in all 17-categories.

The Heroics of Falling Apart

One Couples Breast Cancer Journey

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has experienced or is experiencing a New Cancer Diagnosis or who might be the partner or caregiver for someone with a cancer diagnosis. It gives insight into how one couple did handle the roller coaster ride of a cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment. It is rare to find a book written jointly by both the cancer patient and by the caregiver. It does include humor which is refreshing and encouraging.

The Heroics of Falling Apart:
One Couple's Breast Cancer Journey

"Many books have been written by breast cancer patients, describing their journey. But few have been written by the partners "in the trenches." This book combines insights, traumas, and humor from a husband and wife team, caretaker and patient, who confront the devastating disease from two different emotional perspectives, yet learn to work together and better understand each other through their wrenching journey to health. A must read for patients, their caretakers, and all who love them!"

On March 19, 2009, I would be undergoing my last round of chemo treatment. I'm glad to have come across this lens. I also wrote about my breast cancer journey in my lens, Breast Cancer 101: What you need to Know. My most frustrating experience was getting a proper diagnosis. The chemo experience had its moments but I went through it, what most would consider, with flying colors. And yes, I would consider myself a survivor. I expect to be around next year and many years after. My best advice--"The sooner the better!" Don't be afraid, go find out about your pending diagnosis, right away.

My stepfather got cancer and died 6 months later. Blessed are those that survive cancer. This is a lovely lens.
