Jim Shore Disney Traditions: Storybook Characters from Dumbo, Pinocchio, Bambi, 101 Dalmatians, Lady and the Tramp, and Winnie the Pooh

I love Jim Shore collectibles! This article is about Jim Shore Disney Traditions storybook characters. I have included figurines from Dumbo, Bambi, Pinocchio, 101 Dalmatians, Lady and the Tramp, and Winnie the Pooh. All of these stories were later turned into Disney animated films, which are now available on DVD. A selection of the movies as well as the storybooks can be found towards the end of the article. What a great gift idea - a wonderful figurine paired with the movie or storybook, or both!

Jim Shore's wondeful resin collectibles resemble hand carved wood. Each figurine also incorporates a quilt pattern, another passion of Jim Shore's. This award winning artist was raised in South Carolina by a furniture craftsman father, an artistic mother, and a master quilter grandmother. Enjoy the whimsical, American folk art nature of these beautiful collectibles.

Dumbo

Jim Shore figurines

"Dumbo" was based on a story by Helen Aberson written to accompany a prototype of a toy called Roll-a-Book. The story was made into the fourth animated film classic by Walt Disney in 1941. It is the shortest of his animated films, and was produced to make up for the losses incurred with the production of "Fantasia." This wonderful little elephant, ridiculed for his big ears, charmed everyone when he learned he could fly. His best and only friend was a little mouse named Timothy.

Pinocchio

Pinocchio first appeared in 1883 in an Italian story called "The Adventures of Pinocchio" by Carlo Collodi. The second animated film by Walt Disney, "Pinocchio" was released in 1940. Pinocchio's voice was performed by Dickie Jones. The film won two academy awards: one for Best Original Score and one for Best Original Song, "When You Wish Upon a Star."

Bambi

Jim Shore figurines

"Bambi, a Life in the Woods" was written by Austrian author, Felix Salten, in 1923. The Walt Disney animated film "Bambi" was released in 1942, but had been made into a friendler version than what was portrayed in the original adult novel. Thumper the rabbit and Flower the skunk were Disney's creations introduced as pals of Bambi's to help lighten the theme of the film.

Lady and the Tramp

Jim Shore figurine

"Lady and the Tramp" actually started out as an animated film and later was written as a novel. Joe Grant introduced Walt Disney to sketches of his cocker spaniel and developed a storyboard for a possible film but Disney tabled it. In 1943, Disney bought the rights to a short story called "Happy Dan, the Whistling Dog" written by Ward Greene. Disney combined elements from the two men's work to produce "Lady and the Tramp." Greene wrote the novel based on the film at Walt Disney's insistence, which was released two years prior to the film.

101 Dalmatians

The Dodie Smith novel, "The Hundred and One Dalmatians" written in 1956, was turned into an animated film by Disney Studios in 1961 and retitled "One Hundred and One Dalmatians." Rod Taylor performed the voice for Pongo, the first of the Dalmatians, and Betty Lou Gerson performed the voice of Cruella de Vil, the villain. The film was the seventeenth animated classic for Walt Disney.
