About Jim Clark

Jim Clark was a F1 and Indy 500 driver in the 1960's. The best driver of his era (some would say ever) he was killed in a Formula Two crash while driving for his team, Lotus. He had a close working relationship with Colin Chapman, the owner of Lotus, who was devastated.

1. Possibly the best racing driver in the world. Ever. Hotly disputed by Fangio fans

2. He drove Chapman Lotuses, possibly the coolest cars in the world.

3.The 1967 Grand Prix. A tire blow out left him lapped by every other driver in the race. Rejoining the race, he regained first place, set a new lap record, and despite running out of fuel, coasted the car across the finish line to take third.

The report of Jim Clark's death

The news report of Jim Clark's 1968 accident and tragic death in a Formula 2 race. After this report, Graham Hill, the other Lotus driver would hold the team together for the season to win the team cup. Colin Chapman, Lotus owner, was badly affected stating that he "had lost his best friend". The exact cause of the accident was never discovered.

It was rumoured to be a tire blowout or suspension failure in the poor conditions, but Clark had been known to drive with both of those problems. An alternate cause has also been suggested as the poor conditions were adversely affecting the engines, causing a possible misfire. More from the Times...

Problems arise with comparing the two drivers. Both raced in different time periods with different requirements, and Jim Clark's untimely death left his potential unknown. Nonetheless, this has been disputed by F1 fans for years - and more recently they have been added to by a small group who say that Ayrton Senna should be up there with them.
