Jimmy Durante, Delightful Entertainer

Jimmy Durante came into our homes via early black and white television sets in the 1950's. His soft manner, his quirky comedy, and his sweet songs remain with us all today. He often made jokes about his big nose and became known as "Schnozzola". But it is his music I remember. Jimmy Durante songs were songs to sing again and again -- September Song, Inka Dinka Doo, and As Time Goes By. Wow!

Do you remember his commercials for Kellogg's? "Jimmy Durante, in puyson"

He was a little before my time, but they showed some of his songs on tv in the UK way back. Jimmy was definitely one of a kind, a unique comedian with a unique voice and style. Excellent lens, it's good to remember him, blessed.

I emigrated from Germany to South Africa in 1959 This is where I heard Jimmy Durante for the first time. The way he sang with his charming voice accompanying himself at the piano remained unforgettable. There was one tune where he was happily playing away and he suddenly exclaimed "I never had a lesson in my life". Does anyone know that recording? I'd so much love to hear it again.

    Hi,

Jimmy Durante passed away before I was born, however I have seen some reruns and I laughed like crazy at It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. I really thought he was more of a comedian then a singer.

So what dose Inka Dinky Do mean anyway. LOL

I love this. I just had to click out and read about "Good Night, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are" and find out who she was. Oh me! I was sure surprised that she was actually a person who had a restaurant in our own Calabash. How about that! Who knew!

I knew who he was and I recognized him but I don't remember his show or his songs. I must not have been paying attention. ;-)
