Jindo Dogs - The most popular dogs in Korea

The Jindo dog which originated from Jindo Island in Korea. It is the most popular dog breed in Korea and all Koreans are aware of it. As a Korean American, my mother would always tell me that these dogs are very clean and would bury their own poop if you put them in the backyard. Sure enough when we got our first Jindo dog, I never saw poop anywhere. They are very fastidious about being clean and they will never relieve itself indoors.

Jindo's are very smart pets

The Jindo is a very smart dog, but like an infant it always craves lots of attention from its owner. It can recognize family or stranger extremely well and they make excellent watchdogs. It must be trained early, however, to become good and loyal watchdogs. There are hundreds of stories in Korea about these dogs faithfully returning to their owners when they are sold to others. It is an extremely agile cat like jumper and fences must be kept at least 6 feet. Experiences from owners state that this can be either the best dog you have ever had or the worst dog you ever had. This is due to its independent character it has. With firm and consistant handling they can become extremely loyal and obedient.

Additional traits of the Jindo:

  • Jindos are cautious against strangers.

  • Jindos have strong, instinctual prey drives

  • Requires daily regular exercise.

  • Jindos can be stubborn, owners may have to patient and appreciate their independence, at the same time they really want to please their owners.

  • Very smart and can find ways to slip out of regular collars, you will need to use non-slip collars.

  • Dominant alpha dog personality. If walked on leashes, make sure it is the lead dog.

  • Always wants to be next to its owner. Tell your wife the bitch wants to stay :)

Among some of the Jindo's characteristics:

Ears: Triangular ears, from a side view ears lean forward past vertical.
Jaw: Well developed underjaw wich makes head look round when viewed from the front.
Eyes: Eyes are almond or round. If they are almond, you can swear it looks Asian too!
Gender Differences: Females have more fox like features while males have heavier heads.
Growth: Many dogs reach their full height by 5 months.
Purity: Korean law only recognizes white and tan color Jindos.
Height: Dogs: 18 - 25 inches
Weight: 25-40 lbs.
Life Expectancy: 12-15 years.

Jindo story:

Baekgu the Jindo Dog was sold to a new owner in the city of Daejon which was located 300km away. The dog escaped its current owner and returned to the old owner, haggard and gaunt. He became a national sensation in Korea and Jindo County even erected a statue to honor the dog.

I already have one. I got him while living in Korea and he is the best dog EVER. He's smart, he's clean, and he loves people. However, he's also protective of our home & I never worry about being home alone.

I rescued my jindo/yellow lab cross from our local kill pound and she is the best dog i could've ever got. my only regret was i couldn't get her brother too. but to good news i heard he was adopted through pups on parole. Nova, my jindo/x, is white and blonde and is very loyal and energetic. i got her at 3 months and she's now a little over a year. these dogs are amazing but really need a patient owner b/c their high energy requires alot of work when training. i will deffinately continue to rescue these amazing dogs.

I got 12 week Jindo right here with me. I'm amazed by how intelligent he is and how eager he is to learn. Cutest fella in the world. I left him on the neighbor's lawn because he was being stubborn and didn't want to walk. So he walked by to the house by myself. Before I stepped inside the house, he dashed towards me, with these puppy eyes like it's say, "MEANIE, MEANIE! Why did you leave me like that?!"

No, I don't

Elizabeth says:

I had a Jindo mix rescue named Van Gogh. She had one floppy broken ear. She was so smart. Jindo's are good dogs for people who live alone because they prefer the company of just one person.

Van Gogh saved my life once. I was drowning and she hopped in, pushed my chin up with her chin. Even when she started drowning too (the currents were very strong), she was still trying to save me. I will love that dog forever.

RinchenChodron says:

They are very cute, but I like cats - much lower maintenance, more independent.
