She has now published 11 novels plus three cookery books about French food with Fran Warde, but is probably best known for Chocolat, which became a blockbuster movie starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp.
A thread of paganism and witchery runs through many of the books which is one of the aspects that most appealed to me, but there is also an enticing sensuality about her characters and plots.
Joanne was featured in the BBC Radio 4 programme Front Row which revealed some unknown and interesting sides of her own personality giving insights into her writing. She has synesthesia which causes different senses to become blurred and strongly associated. She described how one shade of red evokes the smell of chocolate while a particular yellow has a really nasty odour.
Three reasons to love Joanne Harris
1. She writes about strong, positive women
2. She has the ability to set a scene and describe a place with very few words yet leave something to your own imagination. When the film Chocolat came out, it was like walking through a town and places in it that I already knew.
3. She writes about food in a very sensual, almost erotic way which is quite unlike any other food writer I know.

- I've heard of the movie, Chocolat, but did not know who the author of the book was, until now. Joanne Harris sounds like an intriguing author with an interesting background. I will have to check her out.

Sometimes this comes from a desire to be someone more exciting, but it can also conceal dark characters and darker intentions.
