Joanne Chen, Accent Reduction & Public Speaking Coach

Joanne Chen, Communication Specialist, holds a B.A. in History (with a concentration in History of Science) from the University of California at Berkeley. She has completed business coursework at UC-San Diego and UC-Los Angeles, as well as acquired extensive training in voice and speech, voiceover, theatre, and improvisational comedy. Joanne's background includes PR/marketing, broadcast and print journalism,event hosting and planning, and the performing arts. She was a news reporter and public affairs writer at KALX 90.7 FM and contributed articles to The Daily Californian, Berkeley Scientific, and Issues: Undergraduate Medical Journal.

Additional career highlights include garnering "Employee of the Year" at Abanco International and managing PR and marketing at San Diego-based educational software company, Total Recall Learning (http://www.TotalRecallLearning.com) She also runs her own accent reduction coaching business.

She is also one of the founding members and the marketing representative of the Jest in Time Comedy Troupe (http://www.jestintimeimprov.com). During her tenure as VP of Education of Carmel Valley Toastmasters, Joanne organized and publicized weekly meetings, a club speech contest, monthly special seminars, and Speechcraft (a public speaking program for the general public). Her creative and enthusiastic efforts led to coverage by The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Her past speaking engagements include the Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce, the San Diego Taiwanese American Community Center, and a UCSD Extension marketing class. Joanne was also the MC at the Opening Ceremony of the Taiwanese American Heritage Week in 2005 and 2006.

She is a member of the American Society of Training and Development. Currently the VP of Public Relations of North Coast Toastmasters, Joanne has received her Competent Communicator (CC) and Competent Leader (CL) designations from Toastmasters International.
