JOB LOSS REPORT UPDATES

Credit Crisis In Hand, Economy Faces Rolling Lay-Offs Which Could Hit Millions

Pepsi, which is supposed to be in the "recession proof" consumer goods sector, reported weak earnings and said it would cut 3,300.

Regarding the decline in revenue at big media companies,CBS, Viacom, Disney, and News Corp are off to multi-year lows. The six large media companies which also include Time Warner, Disney, and the NBCU division of GE employ close to 400,000 people. Adding all who are employed at all large media operations, newspapers, etc. number close to two million. If the recession spreads broadly across the sector it is not hard to image 100,000 or 200,000 people being out of work by the end of 2009.

(MarketWatch) Deutsche Post to cut as many as 10,000 U.S. jobs! It's going to allow DHL to serve overseas clients from the U.S., but the group said it no longer will deliver U.S. packages domestically effective Jan. 30.
DHL's 13,000 employees will be reduced to between 3,000 to 4,000, and 412 stations will be reduced to 103.

The rival of FedEx, TNT and UPS had already cut 5,400 jobs since January.

(MarketWatch) American Express Company
said Thursday it will cut 10% of its global workforce, or about 7,000 jobs, in 2009 as part of a $1.8 billion cost-savings plan. The cuts will occur across business units, the company said. Also, American Express will suspend management salary increases in 2009, and institute a hiring freeze on open positions.

Nortel the Canadian vendor to cut 1,300 additional jobs to cope with downturn.

(MarketWatch) -- Whirlpool Whirlpool Corporation
announced it was cutting 5,000 jobs as it closes a plant in Jackson, Tenn., cuts 500 salaried jobs in North America, and cuts 1,900 international jobs that are mostly in Europe.

Even Dell, which made over $700 million last quarter and has $8 million of cash on hand is taking about sharply lowering expenses.

The news also means that the vicious cycle of lay-offs leading to more lay-offs is accelerating. As those who are unemployed move out of the pool of consumers, GDP is undercut and companies have to chop costs further to stay ahead of falling sales.

All these lost jobs will most likely escalate home foreclosures. We certainly hope not.
