Most working moms would welcome the chance to be at home for their children while still being able to earn a much-needed income. For some, their chosen careers and ambitions require working away from home. There are many others who are in jobs they don't like, with no career prospects. There are others who are looking for work for stay at home moms to supplement dwindling income too.

It doesn't matter how much you love your job, it is gut-wrenching to have to leave a sick child with someone else while you go to work. It is downright terrifying leaving older kids home alone in the afternoons. And when something goes wrong, the guilt alone can kill you. Chances are, if you're a working mom, time is a precious commodity. Between work and sleep, we have only a few hours left to spend with our children, in between housework, cooking, homework and a social life if you're very lucky.

Working from home could change that - quite dramatically. But doesn't starting your own business need capital and skills you just don't have? The answer is not always, depending on what business opportunity you decide to take.

One such opportunity is internet marketing. With very little capital outlay, and basic computer skills, you can start an internet marketing business at home. You'll need a computer with an internet connection, and time. It takes hard work to be successful in internet marketing, and you will have a lot to learn in the beginning, but it is a viable way to make money from home.

Internet marketing, in a nutshell, is the business of promoting and selling products online. To some extent, all businesses are internet marketers via their websites. The difference is that internet marketers do not have a physical store you can visit, or an office you can meet at to discuss the transaction. Your customers shop online, and buy online. Many of the products you promote will be online products - downloadable ebooks, software and videos. The products generally are created by other people, although you can create your own.

There are different types of internet marketing businesses. Most popular is affiliate marketing. You choose a certain area of expertise or interest to get involved in. Via affiliate product retailers such as Clickbank and Commission Junction, you select the products that you want to sell on behalf of the merchants producing them. You then promote and sell those products through your own website, blog, email marketing campaign etc. When visitors click on your affiliate link, and buy something, you earn a commission on that sale. The trick of course, is getting visitors to your site or blog, so you have to find ways to promote your site as well. It gets a bit more complicated, but that's a basic outline of affiliate marketing.

There are other ways to make money online. CPC and CPA programs pay people to take a specific action - click on an advert, fill in surveys and so on, for which you get paid. MLM - multi-level marketing - is gaining popularity online too, as the internet provides a massive opportunity to extend downlines and sell more products. Buying unused domain names and selling them is another option, as is buying dormant websites, fixing them up and reselling them - a bit like virtual real estate!

Internet marketing provides the ideal work at home mums' opportunity. It does not have to cost a fortune to set up, and in the beginning you can keep your day job and get started online at night. Before you start though, do your homework. There are resources available to help you get started, some of them free. Affiliate membership programs provide training, guidance and tools in one place, as well as the opportunity to interact with others who are on the same learning curve as you. Whichever method you choose to get you started, try to remember that if it looks too good to be true, it probably is!
