Web 2.0, Job Search & Recruiting
The tools available to job seekers, employers and recruiters are expanding daily, with much of the focus on more efficient networking and communication, smarter web applications and what may be a paradigm shift in the job board sector.
Find Your Next Job - Here's How
There are many ways to begin your job search - here are some tips for doing so in the modern job search environment
- Resume Writing Services
- Fine tune your resume, or have it written or edited professionally. A good resume is a very basic thing that all job candidates need. It's not the only thing you'll need, nor the most important, but it's the basic step that you'll have to take. If you're not a great writer, or you're unfamiliar with the most up-to-date resume styles, get it done professionally.
- Search some niche job boards
- Big, "one size fits all" job boards are out...or at least their earnings reports say they are. in their place, one tiny niche at a time, are a series of "vertical" job boards that target a particular industry or job type. Find them, use them, get employed...
- Organize your job search with JibberJobber
- JibberJobber is the invention of Jason Alba, who is a talented developer and writer. Jason understands the employment industry well and has created the JibberJobber tool to help job seekers keep track of what jobs they're applying to, with whom they are speaking, and what companies are on their "radar".
- Start networking...a lot
- Networking is the way that many people find jobs these days. Linked In is a networking tool that is part of the new era of "Web 2.0" applications to help people get things done online. It's not solely for job seekers, but there are MANY recruiters on Linked In and you can network from the comfort of your own home here.
- Read blogs - you'll find both job posts and advice for finding a job
- The Locate Jobs Network and the blog are both new, but new isn't necessarily bad. The blog is being updated regularly and will cover everything from unemployment in the U.S. to the best place to search for jobs.
- Speaking of blogs - Blogs with Jobs should have something to offer
- As the name suggests, "Blogs with Jobs" is a list of, well, blogs that offer jobs. Search and sort job listings to find something that appeals to you.
- Hook up with a staffing agency, if you're inclined...
- If you need a short term gig until you can find more permanent employment, or if you merely like to work on a "project" or "contract" basis, hook up with a staffing agency and see what they can do for you. If you're talented and hard-working, I'll guarantee they'll try to get you a position.
- Start your own blog to find a job
- "Blogging for a job" is a fairly new concept in the world of employment and recruiting, but it's begun to take off in a big way. If you don't have your own server to host your blog, try the hosted version of WordPress instead.
- Be persistent (and don't forget Insourced.com)
- There are countless "smaller" job boards out there, some focus on a particular geographic area, some on a particular industry and some even focus on both. Some will cover all industries and there are even job aggregators out there that function for the job seeker like Google does for general searchers. Don't be afraid to look around for these.
