Working in Dubai

Getting a job is always tough, no matter which country you're looking to work in.  With such a culturally diverse and cosmopolitan city like Dubai, there are both advantages and disadvantages to seeking employment.  While there is such a wide variety of fields to move into and the turnaround of employment is rapid to say the least, there is also a lot of favouritism and discrimination caused by so many nationalities all vying for the same position.  This lens offers some much needed advice on working in Dubai, popular fields of interest and the latest careers news.

Job FAQ's

How easy is it to get a job in Dubai?

This all depends on your qualifications and experience. There is a great deal of competition for jobs within the IT field and the hospitality field, and more often than not the best way to get an edge is to have the right degree and work experience.

What is the turnaround of employment?

Compared to most places, extremely high. While in some countries the entire application and acceptance process can take more than 6 months, here the recruitment process is faster. Employee turnover is large and as a vacancy appears, it needs to be filled as quickly as possible.

What do I need to be able to work?

In order to legally work in Dubai, it is essential that you have a valid residency visa, either from the company you are working for, or in the case of a woman, your husband or parental sponsor. It is also a must that all people working here possess a valid labour card which again can be attained through your place of employment.

Are there probationary periods?

In most cases, yes there are. These probationary periods vary according to the contract that has been set by employers and can be extremely short such as a month, 6 months or even up to a year. The most common sort of time frame is 3 months.

Are employment packages available?

They can be. Package employment offers were more common several years ago to encourage expatriates to relocate to the area but with the current levels of popularity for working in Dubai; this is no longer always the case. A lot of companies are trying more and more to offer only cash-based salaries, without accommodation, utilities, tickets, etc%u2026There are, however, package deals available in the job market depending on the field.

What about employment contracts?

Again this was a feature of the Dubai job market before it became so popular. Most employment contracts are permanent these days, bar leaving or being fired. There are some industries that do still offer contracts, usually ranging between one year and 5 years and these are mostly renewable.

Living and Working

Some important tips to balance the two

With employment opportunities available in various fields, finding the right job is important with regards to your lifestyle. As a cosmopolitan city that is becoming more and more round the clock, not to mention more expensive, job packages and working hours are a very important consideration of your job search.

With western countries embracing the standard 9 to 5 working day, don't be surprised to see that this is not always the case here. Some companies start earlier and finish earlier, start later and finish later, or even start earlier and finish later if you're really unlucky. There are also certain fields such as hospitality that may require anti-social working hours or night shifts.

With the commute to work a much complained about topic, finding accommodation that is close to where you work is often handy. There are a number of development projects that are being undertaken away from the city center and have freehold property projects adjacent. Road tolls have recently been introduced in an effort to reduce traffic problems for other commuters.

The biggest factor in the work/life divide is the cost of property which is stuck in an upwards spiral. When seeking a job here it is a necessity to consider the costs of accommodation, especially if there is no housing allowance in your contract. Housing takes a big chunk of peoples salaries here and while other living costs may be cheap, this does put a dent in the cost effectiveness of Dubai life. It is the high rental costs that have caused high demands for freehold property in Dubai.

With the new weekend set in place, the standard days off are Friday and Saturday, however, again this does not apply to everyone. Depending on your field of employment, you may have different days and in some cases, you may not even have a two day weekend.

It is important to be aware of all the costs associated with living in Dubai, and to take these into careful consideration when searching for the right job for you.

New Job In Dubai?

We have some budget accomodation for you....

If its studio, one or two bedroom residential Dubai Property that you are searching for, then allow me to introduce Nakheel's International City development. Located in close proximity to Dubai airport in the Al Warsan area of Dubai, this development offers property based on a number of international architectural styles. So here you will find apartment buildings with diverse styles, from Chinese to English, from Thailand to Spainish and many others as well, hence the developments name. So in all, this is one interesting looking residential complex. But International City is much more than just the one residential area. There are also various commercial and retail facilities based here.

International city is broken down into a number of areas. The main residential district, which will house over 60,000 people and cover an estimated 300 hectares of land, will offer around 2,100 studio and one bedroom apartments for sale. And then there is the Lakes District area, offering two and three bedroom duplex apartments. In total there will be 1375 apartments to pick from here for those looking for residential property, and all set around lakes and greenery. Then there is the central district, which will offer more in the way of commercial property and retail space, with the 21 hectares of land plots being sold to individual developers. And then there is the Dragon Mart, a commercial centre, set to play home to numerous Chinese companies. And the final area of international city is the Forbidden City area. Based on the famous Chinese location, it will feature both retail and residential property options.

And the best thing about International City is that prices here are amongst some of the lowest in Dubai for freehold residential property. So if it's a good value studio, 1, 2, or 3 bedroom apartments that you searching for, International City could well be your answer. And with being built by a Developer of Nakheels standard, the developer who brought the World the Palm Jumeirah and The Dubai Waterfront, you know you will be getting a high standard of home.
Dubai International City
Dubai International City, a project from Dubai's well know developer Nakheel, offers a large range of freehold real estate that aims to be affordable to a large majority of Dubai's residents. A mix of commercial, residential and retail property, here buyers have a broad assortment of real estate options from which to pick. Broken down into a number of different zones, it is the Central Business District or CBD that aims to be the commercial centre point for the development as a whole. Covering a total of 21 Hectares, The Central Business District will consist of 34 land plots, which will offer investors a unique opportunity to become involved in the commercial goings on here.

Buyers can construct their own project here, so long as they follow the general themes found throughout Dubai International City and the CBD. For the majority, the CBD will consist of 10 storey buildings, all featuring basement parking, and with retail options located on the ground floors of the buildings.

With top of the range services and infrastructure, buying into the Central Business district here at International city presents buyers interested in freehold real estate with a number of opportunities. And with a location on Emirates Road, in close proximity to Dubai Airport and within a short drive from The Dubai International Finance Centre, it is also very well located for both residential and commercial purposes.

We currently are launching off plan developments from AED 529,000 in Dubai Sports City, Jumeirah Lake Towers, Jumeirah Village and Dubai International City CBD.
