Joel Osteen Books - Become a Better You

Joel Olsteen is a pastor at the Lakewood Church, home to over 38,000 members and is one of the largest churches in the United States. Joel Olsteen is perhaps one of the best known pastors in the country. He has even turned his talents into book writing. Become a Better You is of of the more well known of the Joel Olsteen books. The premise of the book is to encourage believers and non-believes to get rid of the shackles of self-doubt and take on a more positive self image. The reason why people should stop being in abusive relationships, or letting their past hinder them, or always having a negative self-image is because God created man in his image and he has a divine purpose for everyone's life if they only seek it out.

Become a Better You is not one of the particularly good Joel Olsteen books. Admittedly, the book is very encouraging and can get individuals started on the path to leading their best lives, however, about a fourth of the way through the book it became tedious. This will upset people who love Joel Olsteen books but Become a Better You is a lot of fluff and chapter regurgitation. So much was repeated and spun around in a plethora of different ways. The stories that he told, while providing a glimpse into the troubled lives of many of his followers does not detail if his words were transformative, because in all honestly, we have all heard some derivation of these same stories over and over again. If Mr. Osteen wanted to, this book could have easily been modified and cut in half. There was just not enough substance to justify this book being the length that it is.

Another criticism of Become a Better You, is that it reads not much like a Christian, faith-based book, but more like a motivational, self-help book. To that end, it is a decent read but the goal of Joel Olsteen books is to help Christians become better individuals so that they can become better Christians. With that, there is very little reference to scripture in Become a Better You. Many biblically learned persons may find that a little off-putting because that is what is supposed to differenciate this book from all the other self-help books that this book basically mimics. In that regard, it is very sophomoric.

This book although has good intentions, ultimately falls short.
