Introduction to Joe Louis

This Lens looks at the career highlights of Joe Louis and why he should be considered one of the greatest boxers of all time.

Three reasons why Joe Louis is The Greatest

There were no warnings with a Louis punch. He would lash out like a cobra, and it could be just as deadly.
Murray Goodman, (Boxing Scene. Spring 1995)

"It ain't like a punch, it's like somebody nailed you with a crowbar!"
James J. Braddock being asked what it was like to get hit by "The Brown Bomber's" punch -75 Years of The Ring, Vol. 3, No. 1, 1997 Section: The Best Puncher.

All the blows in Joe Louis arsenal were so perfectly and precisely thrown every time that you get the sense watching him that he couldn't have been wild or sloppy if he tried.
William Dettloff in the 2004 Ring Almanac describing his selection of Joe Louis at #1 among the 100 greatest punchers of all time.

Ring of Hate - More than just a Boxing Match

USA vs Germany in 1938

One of the greatest sporting events in history is told here in splendid, glorious detail. With the world on the brink of war, the fight was billed as a contest of nations and for many, against races as well.

Legends one and all

Muhammad Ali Ali with Sugar Ray Robinson & Joe Louis 16 x 20 Unframed Black & White Photograph

Early in Muhammad Ali's splendacious reign as heavyweight champion, he hired Joe as an "adviser" and they appeared on television together.

"Joe, you really think you coulda whupped me?" Ali said.

"When I had the title," Joe said, "I went on what they called a bum-of-the-month tour."

Ali's voice rose three octaves. "You mean I'm a bum?"

"You woulda been on the tour," Joe told his new employer.

Dear Sir, could you please tell me if there is a photograph of the Lonsdale Belt presented to Joe Louis by The National Sporting Club, after he outpointed Tommy Farr in a World Heavyweight Championship contest in 1937. The belt was an entirely different pattern than those used for the British Title. Originally used for British Empire Title fights and held by Johny King and Dick Corbert.
