Who is Joe Venuti ~ The Father of Jazz Violin

Ranked #5,457 in Music, #151,426 overall

Music Legend Joe Venuti (1902 - 1978)

Like many early jazz greats, Joe Venuti was classically trained, but his brilliant timing and ability to perform electrifying violin solos set him apart from the crowd. On top of being naturally gifted, he devised a technique that allowed him to play four-note chords. His impressive musical abilities placed him in high demand in New York City, where he often worked with childhood friend and guitar virtuoso, Eddie Lang. Together they astounded musicians and fans by blazing the trail for how jazz was to be played on their respective instruments. Joe Venuti performed brilliantly for more than fifty years, and remained active until his death in 1978.

A Few Facts Courtesy of Wikipedia

Giuseppe Venuti, better known as Joe Venuti, was an Italian-American jazz musician and pioneer jazz violinist. Joe Venuti claimed to have been born aboard a ship as his parents emigrated from Italy, though many believe he was born in Philadelphia. Later in life, he said he was born in Italy in 1896 and that he came to the U.S. in 1906. Considered the father of jazz violin, he pioneered the use of string instruments in jazz along with the guitarist Eddie Lang, a childhood friend of his. Through the 1920s and early 1930s, Venuti made many recordings, as leader and as featured soloist. He and Lang became so well known for their 'hot' violin and guitar solos that on many commercial dance recordings they were hired do 12 or 24 bar solos towards the end of otherwise stock dance arrangements.
