The casting could not have been better. Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston are perfect as John & Jenny Grogan, a young couple, both newspaper writers, who have begun life together. What they hadn't planned for was Marley or more appropriately Marley's behavior.
As much of the world now knows Marley truly was John Grogan's dog and the subject of his mega selling 2005 memoir. Marley cannot ever be confused with Lassie. Minding was not in this canine's vocabulary while he certainly understood consuming uneatable objects, pawing strangers, and swiping a Thanksgiving turkey. What Marley does have is a huge heart and boundless love.
Marley & Me" is so much more than a movie about a lovable canine, it's the story of a family - how they grew together, their celebrations and their griefs. It's also a tale sure to provoke both laughter and tears. So, bring a box of tissue for the closing scenes.
Jennifer Aniston is pretty as ever in a not too demanding role; although you've seen him do it before Alan Arkin does grumpiness well as a newspaper editor. The prize goes to Owen Wilson who gives an extremely affecting performance.

John and Jenny Grogan (John Grogan's wife) have been catapulted into the public life though the story of their Labrador Retriever dog Marley.
John Grogan (pronounced /'gru?g?n/)(born March 20, 1957) is an American journalist and non-fiction writer. His memoir Marley & Me (2005) was a best-selling book about his family's dog Marley. He had been a reporter, bureau chief, and columnist for newspapers in Michigan and Florida before becoming the editor in chief of Rodale's Organic Gardening magazine. He was a columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer. The Inquirer published a volume of his best articles in 2007 called, Bad Dogs Have More Fun. His next memoir, The Longest Trip Home, was released on October 21, 2008.
He lives with his wife, Jenny, and their three children, Patrick, Conor, and Colleen in rural eastern Pennsylvania. Grogan's dog Marley appeared in the movie The Last Home Run. He was on film for less than 2 minutes when a van pulls up to a curb and a girl steps out followed by a boy with Marley.

Marley & Me is a 2008 American dramedy film directed by David Frankel. The screenplay by Scott Frank and Don Roos is based on the memoir of the same title by John Grogan. The film was released in the United States and Canada on December 25, 2008 and set a record for the largest Christmas Day box office ever with $14.75 million in ticket sales.
Marley and Me - Book Summary
Told in first-person narrative, the book 'Marley & Me' portrays Grogan and his family's life during the thirteen years that they lived with their dog Marley, and the relationships and lessons from this period.
Marley, a yellow Labrador Retriever, is described as a highly strung, boisterous, and somewhat uncontrolled dog. He is strong, powerful, endlessly hungry, eager to be active, and often destructive of their property (but completely without malice).
Marley routinely fails to "get the idea" of what humans expect of him and at one point the comment is made that mental illness might be a plausible explanation for his behavior. His acts and behaviors are forgiven, however, since it is clear that he has a heart of gold and is merely living within his nature.
During his escapades he makes a two-minute credited appearance in the movie The Last Home Run (filmed in 1996 and released in 1998).
The strong contrast between the problems and tensions caused by his neuroses and behavior, and the undying devotion, love and trust shown towards the human family as they themselves have children and grow up to accept him for what he is, and their grief when he finally dies in old age, form the backdrop for the biographical material of the story.
