So many world records broken, and that was before the match even ended! The Wimbledon 2010 match between John Isner and Nicholas Mahut has become the longest match in tennis history! This is an unprecedented match the likes of which have never been seen before and probably never will again, not least because the rules may well change for future Wimbledon matches.
Not only was it the longest ever match, stretching over 3 days for a total of over 11 hours, it broke the record for the most games in a match (finishing on 183 games). They also claimed the longest ever set in a match, with the fifth and final set totalling over 8 hours alone. The final score was 70-68, and the set went on so long that the digital scoreboard broke at 47-all! They also both smashed the previous record of most aces in a match, which had stood at 78. Mahut hit 103 aces but Isner claimed the record with 112.
The Numbers Game
According to the official Wimbledon website, the incredible final numbers are as follows:
Longest Match Ever
11 hours 5 minutes. The previous match record was 6 hours 33, recorded at the French Open between Fabrice Santoro and Arnaud Clement.
Longest Ever Set
The final set was 8 hours 11 minutes.
Most Games Ever in a Set
138 games in the final set, easily beating the previous record of 46 set by Nicola Pietrangeli and Nikola Pilic in 1962 and equalled by Pancho Gonzales and Charlie Pasarell in 1969.
Most Games Ever in a Match
183 games in total, which comfortably surpassed the previous record of 112, held by Gonzales and Pasarell 41 years ago in the match mentioned above. And that was played before the introduction of tie-breaks!
Most Aces Ever in a Match
Both players surpassed the record set only last year at the Davis Cup by Ivo Karlovic, which was 78. Mahut managed 103 while Isner claimed the title with a massive 112.

- I'm new to this guy but at 6 foot 9 it's clear he is going to have a fantastic reach to hit that ball! Of course, it takes a lot of talent too, and there's no doubt from what I've read here that he has plenty of that.
