John Liston Byam Shaw was born in Madras, India to English parents in 1872 where his father was a legal official. The family returned to England around 1878. Both of Shaw's parents highly encouraged the young Shaw's artistic talents, having him tutored by J. A. Vintner from 1880 until the death of Shaw's father in 1887. Shaw's mother still wanted him to peruse art even though the rest of the family opposed, so she arranged for her son to meet with John Everett Millais. Millais advised that Shaw prepare to attend the Royal Academy Schools. As a result Shaw then entered St John's Wood prior to attending the Academy in 1890 where he would study until 1892.
Byam Shaw exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1898, his paintings displaying both his Pre-Raphaelite style and a distinct Art Nouveau flavor. Considered a later generation follower of the Pre-Raphaelites, Shaw was especially influenced by John Waterhouse and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, works such as 'The Blessed Damozel' and 'Rose Marie' were symbolist pieces born directly from Rossetti's poetry.

Biography
One of the more famous paintings shown at the Royal Academy was Jezebel in 1896, modeled by Rachel Lee, a close friend of Byam Shaw's. Jezebel is shown at her death as she is being thrown to the dogs. Lee posed for Shaw on several occasions but this was the first nude, and the sensuality depicted in the painting raised objections from the critics. The painting remained unsold for years. Finally Shaw was offered a sum to alter the work and due to the fact that the artist was in need of funds, Shaw painted over the original. In 1910 artists Gerald Metcalfe, Vicat Cole, and Byam Shaw opened the Byam School of art. They became known as the 'lable school' as a result of their characteristic signature of a trompe l'oeil cartouche. Shaw was also painted portraits and was a prolific illustrator with a strong sense of design, contributing to several magazines and children's books, along with 39 volumes of Shakespeare.
