John Melhuish Strudwick
John Melhuish Strudwick was educated at the Royal Academy Schools, where he was not a prospering pupil. After that, he worked as studio help to Pre-Raphaelite artists Edward Burne-Jones and John Roddam Spencer Stanhope. The influence of Burne-Jones is distinctly obvious in his art. Strudwick was a strongly gifted artist in his own right, all the same, and his artworks could be gauged on their own substantial virtues. His paintings employed a unsophisticated, flat view, and were greatly praised by George Bernard Shaw, who remarked on the beauty and truth of Strudwick's handling of landscape, sky, and foliage. The beginning of twentieth century brought with it evolutions to the art world which left place for Strudwick or his style of painting. As a result of negative critisizims from the current art community, he was pushed to stop painting, he was quite virtually disgraced to artistic silence.

Biography
John Melhuish Strudwick was born in Clapham and studied art at South Kensington, then later at the Royal Academy Schools. At the Royal Academy he was not particularly successful and it was not until he worked as studio assistant first to John Roddam Spencer Stanhope and later Edward Burne Jones that he found focus in his work. Strudwick was fortunate in that he had two extremely rich patrons, Liverpool ship owners William Imrie and George Holt however they withdrew their support when his career went into decline. The painting When Sorrow comes in Summer Days, Roses Bloom in Vain was left intentionally unfinished as a symbol of his disenchantment. The painting was a part of Strudwick's final exhibition held at the time of the artist's sixtieth birthday.John Strudwick exhibited only one piece, Song Without Words, at the Royal Academy in 1876, showing his work primarily at the Grosvenor Gallery. His paintings often have a musical theme, his colors deep and rich with an Italian flavor added. He is known for his minute attention to accessories and draperies, making otherwise static, lifeless art highly decorative.
Museums: John Melhuish Strudwick may be found at The National Museums & Galleries at Merseyside or The Manchester City Art Galleries.
