John Muir - Wilderness Prophet and Father of The National Parks System

The United States is forever indebted to John Muir, the "Father of the National Park Service" for helping to preserve this countries greatest treasures, our National Parks.

John Muir (1838-1914) was America's most famous and influential naturalist and conservationist and one of California's most important historical personalities. He has been called a "Wilderness Prophet," and "Citizen of the Universe" and the man who made the U.S. go green.

Having grown up on the Northern Border of Yosemite and spent so much time hiking in Yosemite and enjoying the beauty in the park, I am grateful he had the vision to help preserve this area and other wilderness areas for people to continue to use for generations to come, so I can share my childhood experiences with my own children.

John Muir's life reminds us of the important things that just one person can do. He remains today an inspiration for environmental activists everywhere.

Three Reasons to Admire John Muir

  1. His activism preserved Yosemite Valley as a National Park.
  2. He was one of the first modern preservationists.
  3. He founded the Sierra Club "to make the mountains glad."

John Muir (21 April 1838 - 24 December 1914) was a Scottish-born American naturalist, author, and early advocate of preservation of U.S. wilderness. His letters, essays, and books telling of his adventures in nature, especially in the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California, have been read by millions and are still popular today. His activism helped to save the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas. The Sierra Club, which he founded, is now one of the most important conservation organizations in the United States. One of the most well-known hiking trails in Am...

Nature's Peace Quote by John Muir

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings.
Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees.
The winds will blow their own freshness into you,
and the storms their energy,
while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.

Great lens. I featured it on my new lensography on the environment. Go check it out and add your favorite environment links to the plexo: http://www.squidoo.com/environment-lensography

There's also a duel about the question: is the environment more important, or the economy?
