John Roddam Spencer-Stanhope (British, 1829-1908) Biography
John Roddam Spencer-Stanhope is considered to be a second generation of Pre-Raphaelite artists. He had a wide circle of friends within the Pre-Raphaelite art world and was one of the painters to assist in the painting of the Oxford Union's 'jovial campaign' including Arthur Hughes, Valentine Cameron Prinsep and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
Stanhope was educated at the Rugby and Christ Church in Oxford and spent a short time studying under George Frederick Watts. He was a follower of a Edward Burne Jones , an influence which is evident in his work. Stanhope also admired Italian art

Being of independent means he had no particular need to sell or exhibit his art, and eventually Stanhope settled outside Florence where he would paint modern works in the style of the Italian Renaissance.His niece Evelyn de Morgan traveled with him and his paintings turned to more classical and mythological subjects. John Roddam Spencer-Stanhope died in the Villa Nuti in 1908.
