John Tavares: From the London Knights to The NHL?

John Tavares has been playing in the Ontario Hockey League for three seasons with the Oshawa Generals and the London Knights and he is expected to be the number one NHL draft pick of the New York Islanders in the next draft which will be held June 26th.

Tavares will be turning 19 in September, and has been the OHL's all-time leading scorer with 215 goals and 218 assists. The center split time between the Oshawa Generals and London Knights this season, tallying 58 goals and 46 assists. He had six goals and eight assists in nine playoff games for London.
The New York Islanders won the draft lottery (as expected) and now have the good fortune to be able to draft John Tavares as the number one overall draft pick in this year's entry draft to be held June 26th. Will the Isles take him or will they trade away a potential franchise player who might be the key component any NHL team can build a winner around? I say no they won't, but as the Islanders are draft pick rich this year, they are definitely going to be on the rise. If they can get a few blue-chippers to augment Tavares' skills in 2-3 years the Islanders might be one of the most exciting teams going. If, if, if...

New York Islanders Win Draft Lottery

Will They Choose Tavares?

It was just announced that the New York Islanders will choose first in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft to be held June 26th and as expected, John Tavares is at the top of every NHL General Manager's wish list. Tavares is now touted as the top prospect available in this year's draft and other teams are already clamoring for the Isles to trade their pick so that Tavares can come to their teams.

Brian Burke of the Toronto Maple Leafs has already had a press conference announcing the Leafs intention to move up in the draft (they currently have the 7th spot) and you know that Burke is positioning himself and the Leafs for a run at obtaining John Tavares from the Islanders. The Islanders are dealing from a strong position themselves.

They have the number one draft pick and also they have the San Jose Sharks first round pick as well as 3 more in the second round. Obviously not all five of those picks will hit the ice in Islanders jerseys in October, but this does herald the beginning of new things for them.

If Tavares can lift the entire organization on his back and take the team to the Stanley Cup is asking too much of anyone at this point in their career. Wait and see...

Tavares Leads Team Canada Over U.S. With 7-4 Win

World Junior Championships

After Team USA jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 13 minutes, Tavares decided enough was enough and scored 2 goals in less than a minute to spark Team Canada for an eventual 7-4 victory.

John Tavares' Junior Career At A Glance

Tavares exploded into the hockey consciousness when he was granted exceptional-player status at age 14, which allowed him to enter the 2005 OHL Priority Draft and play in the league days before his 15th birthday. After being the first player picked by Oshawa, he had 45 goals and 77 points and was named OHL and Canadian Hockey League rookie of the year. He followed that with a remarkable 72-goal, 134-point season in 2006-07. He broke Wayne Gretzky's league record for goals by a 16-year-old, and won OHL and CHL player of the year awards.

- Helped lead Canada to a gold medal at the 2008 World Junior Hockey Championship
- Scored 40 goals and 118 points in 59 games with the Generals in 2007-08
- In 2006-07, broke a mark previously held by Wayne Gretzky by scoring 72 goals in a season as a sixteen-year-old in the OHL
- At age 14, was taken first overall by Oshawa in the 2005 OHL Priority Draft.

Tavares With the London Knights

So far: 33 Goals, 63 Points in 36 Games

So far, John Tavares, the London Knights' newly acquired center, has been more than just good. Through 36 games, he's second in the OHL with 63 points, but leads the league with 33 goals. He's been more committed to playing a full, 200-foot game; he's playing on the power play and killing penalties, and his three shorthanded goals lead the OHL. He already has 9 points (7 goals, 2 assists) in only 4 games with the Knights.

Tavares has proven he can be a star scorer and a sublime playmaker. Now playing on the London Knights after waiving his no-trade clause he had with the Oshawa Generals, he's showing that he can combine being the best player on the ice with being the best leader off it.
