Godward was a Victorian Neo-classicist, and consequently a follower of Lord Frederick Leighton. Godward was born in 1861 as well as lived in Wilton Grove, Wimbledon. He presented at the Royal Academy from 1887. At the time he relocated to Italy in the company of one of his models in 1912, his family ceased all contact with him and also cut his picture from family photos. Godward came back to England in 1919, passed away in 1922. He is buried in Brompton Cemetery, London.
