Godward was an admirer of Lord Frederick Leighton and Lawrence Alma-Tadema with his subjects being similar to those of the two neo-classic painters. Godward's work featured the same 'girls on marble terraces' school. Upon his return to England in 1919, Godward was subject to ill health, artistic criticism and depression. He committed suicide by putting his head in a gas oven at the age of sixty-one and is alleged to have penned in his suicide note that "the world was not big enough" for him as well as a Pablo Picasso.
His previously alienated family, who had disapproved of him being a painter, was disgraced by his suicide and burned his papers. No photographs of Godward are known to have survived.

Biography
Museums: John Godward may be found at the Manchester City Art Galleries.Godward was a Victorian Neo-classicist, and consequently a follower of Lord Frederick Leighton. All the same, Godward's style can be seen as more closely related to the works of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Both Godward and Alma-Tadema display a mutual preference for the depicting of Classical architecture, in particular, still landscape views featuring structures of marble.
The large bulk of Godward's existing works have women in neoclassic costume, placed in serene landscapes, although there exist a few semi-nude and fully nude figures enclosed in his body of work. One noteworthy case is the painting titled In The Tepidarium, a title common with a disputed Alma-Tadema painting of the like theme. Alma-Tadema's painting resides today in the Lady Lever Art Gallery. The title In The Tepidarium call attention to Godward's origin of inspiration: Classical culture, more notably that of Ancient Rome. This attraction to such topics is yet again a case attaching Godward intimately to Alma-Tadema artistically, although Ancient Greece is occasionally portrayed in Godward's work, therefore allowing for artistic associations, if of a more modified extent, to the paintings of Lord Frederick Leighton.
Granted that classical learning had been more forgiving between the likely audience for his work during his lifetime than it would be viewed today, precise research of detail was crucial to an artist in order to achieve a a reputation for this style. Alma-Tadema had been, in addition to a painter, an archaeologist who went to historical places and amassed artifacts which were frequently utilized in his paintings.

Dolce Far Niente - John William Godward

The look of exquisite women in affected positions in several of Godward's paintings drives several entrants to his art to categorize him erroneously for having been Pre-Raphaelite, especially since his color can be frequently a brightly colorful one. All the same, the selection of content, past culture versus, for illustration, Arthurian legend, is increasingly correct for those of a Victorian Neo-classicist: nevertheless, it can be suited to remark that shared with several painters current with him, Godward was a 'High Victorian Dreamer', creating beautiful pictures concerning a world that, it need be stated, was perfect as well as romantic, therefore which in the example concerning both Godward and Alma-Tadema was to referred as a view of 'Victorians in togas'.
