John Philip Holland and the Holland submarines

John Philip Holland was an Irish engineer who designed the first formally commissioned submarines for the US Navy, and also for the Royal Navy.

Please note that, although my surname is also Holland, I'm not related in any way to John Philip Holland.

Chronology of John Philip Holland and the Holland submarines 

  • 1840: John Philip Holland was born in Liscannor (County Clare, Ireland) on 29 February.
  • 1858-1872: Worked as a teacher with the Christian Brothers in Limerick and elsewhere in Ireland.
  • 1873: Emigrated to the United States.
  • 1873-1879: Worked as a teacher in Paterson (NJ, USA).
  • 1875: First submarine designs were submitted for consideration by the US Navy, but turned down as unworkable.
  • 1881: Submarine, Fenian Ram, was launched.
  • 1895: J.P. Holland Torpedo Boat Company received a contract from the US Navy to build a submarine.
  • 1897: Privately-built submarine, Holland VI, was launched on 17 May.
  • 1898: A successful Holland, the first truly practical submarine, was launched.
  • 1899: The Electric Boat Company was founded on 7 February.
  • 1900: USS Holland purchased by US Navy on 11 April, and then commissioned on 12 October.
  • 1901: Holland Class submarines were built for Royal Navy under licence from The Electric Boat Company. Holland 1 was launched on 2 October in secret. Now on display at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport.
  • 1902: Holland 2 was launched in February 1902. Holland 4 launched 23 May. Holland 3 was commissioned on 1 August.
  • 1911: Holland 3 sank in trials.
  • 1912: Holland 4 foundered on 3 September. Holland 5 was lost off the Sussex Coast.
  • 1913: Holland 2 sold on 7 October. Holland 3 sold in October.
  • 1914: John Philip Holland died in Newark (NJ, USA) on 12 August. Holland 4 was salvaged and sunk as a gunnery target on 17 October.
  • 2005: Wreck site of Holland 5 designated under the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973 on 4 January.

John Philip Holland () (29 February, 1840 ? 2 August, 1914John Philip Holland article, Encyclopaedia Britannica) was an engineer who developed the first submarine to be formally commissioned by the U.S. Navy (though not the first American submarine, see American Civil War submarines, and the earlier Nautilus and Turtle) and the first ever Royal Navy submarine, the Holland 1.
