John Wetton - An Extraordinary Life!
He helped to start a new movement in progressive rock by founding the supergroup Asia in the early 1980's with drummer Carl Palmer (Atomic Rooster & Emerson, Lake and Palmer), keyboardist Geoff Downes (The Buggles & Yes), and guitarist Steve Howe (Yes).
A look at his career shows that he's certainly worked hard to earned his place in Rock 'n Roll history, and has indeed led "An Extraordinary Life!"
"Go, seize the day
Wake up and say
This is an extraordinary life, oh
Enjoy today
Come what may
This is an extraordinary"

John Wetton Before King Crimson
Wetton grew up in Bournemouth, Dorset (England), and was a member of several local bands The Corvettes, The Palmer-James Group, Tedrad and Ginger Man early on.
He became a member of Mogul Thrash and appeared on their only album in 1971, then recorded with former King Crimson singer Gordon Haskell on his solo album, It Is and It Isn't.
He was invited by his childhood friend, Robert Fripp, to join King Crimson around the time their fourth album, Islands, was being worked on, but Wetton joined the band Family instead. Family had been famous in the late 60's in the underground psychedelic/progressive scene along with bands such as Soft Machine, The Move, The Nice and Pink Floyd
Wetton played guitars (including bass), and shared vocal duties with Roger Chapman on Family's fifth and sixth albums Fearless in 1971 and Bandstand in 72.
Wetton also played bass on Larry Norman's Only Visiting This Planet in 72, which is considered one of the "25 Christian Albums You Need to Own From the '70s" by CCM Magazine.
Mogul Thrash
Besides Litherland, Mogul Thrash consisted of Wetton, who had just come from being the singer/bassist for Splinter, Mike Rosen on trumpet, drummer Bill Harrison and the so-called "Dundee Horns" -- saxophonists Roger Ball and Malcolm "Molly" Duncan (Ball and Duncan went on to be founding members of the Average White Band).
The group renamed itself Mogul Thrash and debuted in 1970 with the single "Sleeping in the Kitchen", their self-titled RCA album was released the following year without much notice at home, but did find fans throughout much of Europe.
Due to legal problems with their management, Mogul Thrash was forced to disband shortly after the record's release.

It Is and It Isn't - Gordon Haskell
After leaving Crimson, Haskell went back to doing solo work. He met the president of Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegun through John Muir, who was managing John Wetton at the time. After playing six songs for Ertegun, Haskell was signed to record what would become It Is and It Isn't and Wetton was brought in to play bass.
It Is and It Isn't
Gordon Haskell is best known for his connection with King Crimson, singing on their 2nd & 3rd albums. In 1971 he recorded one of his early solo albums, 'It Is And It Isn't It' which features future King Crimson member, John Wetton.

Bandstand - Family
Family's sixth studio album, released in 1972, was the second and last album to chart in the United States. It was also their last album with John Wetton.
Wetton's role in the band was reduced on this album, and he left to join King Crimson after it was completed. They replaced him with bassist Jim Cregan, then toured North America with Elton John.
On that tour they built up a small but loyal cult following in the U.S. after receiving favorable exposure from American critics and radio DJs.

John Wetton With King Crimson
In 1972, John Wetton joined percussionist Jamie Muir, drummer Bill Bruford and David Cross as the new members of King Crimson.
Of the previous line up, only Robert Fripp remained, Richard Palmer-James was added as a replacement for lyricist Peter Sinfield. Palmer-James had belonged to the same local Bournemouth bands as Wetton and had been a member of Supertramp, but quit six months after the release of their debut album.
Larks Tongues in Aspic - King Crimson
Other major differences on this album include David Cross' violin instead of the saxophone players of earlier recordings, and using dual percussionists, with Muir being more experimental by using various improvisational instruments including bicycle-horn bulbs, bullroarers, sheet metal, toys, and gongs hit with chains. Wetton's strong playing gave the band a more distinctive bass than found on any previous albums, and Fripp's guitar became more aggressive than before.

Starless and Bible Black - King Crimson
Jamie Muir had left do to a personal spiritual crisis, and the band was kept in the dark about the real reason for his departure, they thought is was due to injures he received while performing during a show.
Bruford was able compensated for the loss of Muir, but the band was beginning to become divided. Cross became increasingly frustrated with his acoustic violin being drowned out by Bruford and Wetton's strong playing which was compared to a flying brick wall.
Cross was voted out of the band after the end of the 1974 tour.

Red - King Crimson
Despite this, Red was one of the strongest and most consistent King Crimson albums to up to this point. It has been described as "an impressive achievement" for a group about to disband, with "intensely dynamic" musical chemistry between the band members that resulted in a record "aggressive and loud enough to strip the wallpaper off your living room wall".
"One More Red Nightmare" had lyrics by Wetton, and is the first Crimson track with vocals to be solely written by instrument playing members of the band.
David Cross was out of the band at this point, but does appear on "Providence", which was recorded live at the Palace Theatre, Providence, USA, on June 30, 1974 during the previous tour, and on "Starless". Former band members Mel Collins and Ian McDonald also helped complete the album.
Red remains a very popular album, John Wetton, told Robert Fripp that according to the producer of Nirvana's early albums, Red had been very important to Kurt Cobain. It was rated the Number 1 album of 1974, and 50th greatest album over all by users of Rate Your Music.com, and in 2001, Q magazine named it as one of the 50 Heaviest Albums of All Time.

The album followed Heep's disappointing Wonderworld album. With Return To Fantasy they tried to get back to the more gothic and mystical feel of their earlier albums, and Wetton helped to re-energize the group by bringing some new ideas to the table.

Uriah Heep's ninth studio album was their last with vocalist and founding member David Byron, who was fired due to his troubles with alcohol.
The album was not received very well, and may have suffered from the underlying tensions. They were still feeling the lose of Gary Thain, as shown by songs like "Weep In Silence" and "Misty Eyes".
Wetton also wasn't comfortable he felt that was becoming a part of the band, and was being seen as just replacement for Thain. He quite while the band was still getting over Byron's firing.

John Wetton with U.K.
In 1976, Wetton formed the group, U.K.,with Bill Bruford which began when they tried to form a new band with Rick Wakeman, who had worked with Bill in Yes, but after Wakeman's record label disapproved of him working with King Crimson's old rhythm section (Wetton and Bruford), the two attempted to get Robert Fripp to reform Crimson.
That didn't work, so they decided to form a new group. Wetton brought in former Roxy Music member Eddie Jobson from Frank Zappa's band, to play Electric Violin, keyboards and Electronics. Bruford brought in guitarist Allan Holdsworth who had worked on Bruford's solo album and had been a member of Soft Machine, and Gong.
